标题: [讨论] OG 249
Ok, 249B is the answer...
249B. ffice:smarttags" />Bluegrass musician Bill Monroe, whose repertory, views on musical collaboration, and vocal style influenced generations of bluegrass artists, also inspired many musicians, including Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music differed significantly from his own.
But, should it be "whose music significantly differed from his own"? Is it cool to split up phrase "differs from"? What is the difference between the two positions of adverb here?
In the explanation for 245, OG makes a big deal on“squinting modifier (a modifier (as often in *getting dressed often is a nuisance*) so placed in a sentence that it can be interpreted as modifying either what precedes or what follows)”

Hi, bunnier.
1, I think that an adverb should be placed after a verb
2, However, adverbs are before adj.
I wonder whether it is what you are looking for.

Hey Snazzy... thanks for your viewpoints!
Agree with you on #2, adverbs come before adj.
As for verbs, there 3 positions to place their adverbs:
1. Initial: Usually I get up early.
2. Mid: He quickly got dressed.
3. End: He got dressed quickly. I get up early.
But, bunnier has been told (doesn't remember when/where) that placing adverbs in the middle of a phrase isn't a good practice, i.e. "get early up" or "differed significantly from".
Is ETS' rule different?

that's an awesome question!
i guess you are right. However if you look at the 5 choices vertically, you'll find CD is redundant (in comparison to, compared to), E has no logical referent for "from that of", and AB are both using "differed significantly from". Therefore, in this case it is acceptible.
Although i agree with you that GET UP EARLY should not be GET EARLY UP, here "differed significantly from" sounds just fine to me.
Anyone can help explain why?
thanks!

这个问题确实可怕,为什么differ from中间可以加上significantly,我好象在有的句子里面看到过一个固定的动词词组里面有副词的出现,但是记不清楚了。大家都来讨论一下这个问题吧。
谢谢。
