Some species of Arctic birds are threatened by recent sharp increases in the population of snow geese, which breed in the Arctic and are displacing birds of less vigorous species. Although snow geese are a popular quarry for hunters in the southern regions where they winter, the hunting season ends if and when hunting has reduced the population by five percent, according to official estimates. Clearly, dropping this restriction would allow the other species to recover.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the argument?

我选的是D，因为我认为随着数量的增加，雪雁在一些新的地方定居，这不就是说明了即使去掉了关于5%的禁令也没用，因为这些雪雁去了以前从未去过的新地方，猎人打不到~不正好削弱么？
那位大侠解释一下B为什么是答案？我看了很多人的答案~都不是很有说服力

B的意思是说:就算有5%的禁令,但hunting season在达到5%之前就结束了.
也就是说,就算没有5%的禁令,也hunt不了5%以上的雪雁,对雪雁的数量没有任何影响.
所以削弱了原文的结论.

D说的是:雪雁数量一直在增多
而取消5%的禁令后,就有可能使人们猎取更多的雪雁,从而抑制雪雁的数量.
D选项实际是支持了原文的结论,而非削弱.

去新地方定居的意思是雪雁数量扩张到了新地方.
并不是指雪雁移居到了新地方...lz做了一个无关推论.(而且这些新地方也不代表猎人打不到,又是一个无关推论...)

我想这样解释可能透彻些：
猎杀雪鹅的量达到其总数的5%是，结束捕猎期的充分条件（从if and when可知），也就是说还有别的可能可以终止捕猎期——即在达到猎杀5%总量前终止（重要暗示）。

本题关键在于两个日期：
scheduled date是官方根据以往的雪鹅总数，猎杀量，等统计数据推算出当年达到5%的雪鹅猎杀量所需要的捕猎天数，进而推算出当年结束狩猎的具体日期；closing date是实际结束狩猎期的日期。

B所表达的意思是：历年来，每年的closing date 都早于当年 scheduled date（推算出来的日期）,也就是说，由于某些原因，实际被猎杀的雪鹅数，总是达不到5%*总量！这样一来，调高5%限额以提高雪鹅猎杀量是没有意义的。

再看了一下B选项,说得好像应该是:

自禁令导致狩猎季节提前结束，已经有好几年了。（意思是现在已经没有提前结束的情况了）

也就是说,以前禁令可以发挥效果，使hunting season提前结束，每年只猎5%的雪雁。
而现在的hunting season都是到了scheduled date才结束的。使得每年猎杀的雪雁数量可能<5%.

N纠结B选项的句子结构。。。太TM绕了。。。

结合选项和题目. 我的理解是在recent这个词上. 题目中说是最近才发生的sharp increase. // B 选项中说这个狩猎限制导致每年的狩猎期提前结束这一现象已经持续很多年了. 足已说明,并不是狩猎限制的问题. 如果是狩猎限制影响雪鹅的sharp increase, 那many years ago就应该出现了,不会等到现在. 所以在整个sharp increase事件当中狩猎限制这一条件对雪鹅数量不怎么起作用. 所以改变狩猎限制也不会见得预期的效果. //不对的话,请大家帮忙指正.

B的意思是（上一次）因猎杀限制而导致捕猎季节提前结束已经过去好几年了
这样一来，说明人们对猎杀goose没什么兴趣，所以放宽限制也没什么用。
如果要说有许多年因为猎杀限制而导致捕猎季节提前结束的话，应该是
There are many years that the hunting season being closed earlier than the scheduled date, becuase of the restriction.

最关键的是B选项的理解，距离上一次因为限制而导致捕猎季节提前结束的发生已经过去很多年了，所以最近几年捕猎量一直没有达到5%的上限，所以即使放宽了5%的限制，也不能使捕到的雪雁增加。

每年都估计打猎期1个月，这么多年1个月根本3％都打不到，你这个时候说用把5%提到4%吧，能有毛用。

不好意思看了你的解释这个部分不太懂
以前禁令可以发挥效果，使hunting season提前结束，每年只猎5%的雪雁。
而现在的hunting season都是到了scheduled date才结束的。scheduled date 是比之前结束的日期晚，所以在以往打到5%之后又多了几天继续打猎
所以推出每年猎杀的雪雁数量一定大于5%

对于（B）项，很多童鞋都存在一个巨大的误解，SINCE在这里并不引导原因状语从句，做解释说明，而是作为现在完成时的标准时间状语引导词，自从...——因为主句为现在完成时态，It has been many years，也就是说，本句应该翻译为：自从（以前）restriction导致捕猎季提前结束（到现在）已经有很多年了。如果since表示原因，则it has been years无法正确翻译——因为restriction导致捕猎季提前结束，所以已经有很多年了？
这样的话，对于答案理解也就更加明了了，也就是说以前restriction确实有用过（使得捕猎季提前结束），但是很多年前就没有作用了（因为那时起猎人就没有猎得5%的雪雁），因此现在即便是有最高限制，但是猎人们根本无法完成5%的捕猎量（以使得捕猎季提前结束），因此，即便以后取消5%的限制，这个结果也不会使得雪雁的数量下降进而保护到其他种群。这样就削弱了文章结论。

之所以提前结束，不是因为很快超过了5%的限吗？这不正说明人们很爱打snow goose吗？

如果没猎到5%，不管猎人爱不爱打，狩猎季也不会结束啊。
