A,C,D it指代对象没有

B competition作为once...的逻辑主语，不对．

不行, 从句代词优先指代主句主语.

除了指代主语以外，在什么情况下可指代别的呢？

那D的IT放在前面就更没戏了？

如果IT放在前面，并且不是做形式主语，那就是说一定错了？

     A中that指代了前面的句子，错

                             it指代不清，因为it was predominantly grain-producing，如果it指代Pennsylvania ，那么意思上显然很荒谬，Pennsylvania 怎么能是grain-producing？

    B         Once predominantly a grain-producing state修饰competition 错

C         还是that和it的问题

                 此外：by competition from large western farms in the mid-nineteenth century,双介词短语连用修饰，很容易造成不清楚

D：it问题

                     competition in the mid-nineteenth century by 错，作为竞争的受动者，应该用from，而非by。意思上很明显的错误
