231. Ms. Chambers is among the forecasters who predict that the rate of addition to arable lands will drop while those of loss rise.fficeffice" />
(A) those of loss rise
(B) it rises for loss
(C) those of losses rise
(D) the rate of loss rises
(E) there are rises for the rate of loss
Choice D, the best answer, uses the idiomatic and clear construction the rate of addition . . . will drop while the rate of loss rises. All of the other choices use incorrect, illogical, or imprecise constructions in place of the rate of loss rises. In A and C, the plural pronoun those has no plural noun to which it can logically refer. In B, it refers to the rate of addition; consequently, B makes the nonsensical statement that the rate of addition... rises for loss(代词指代引起的歧义). Choice E supplies the idiomatic the rate of loss but introduces it with the unidiomatic and wordy there are rises for.

Can someone translate the sentense in Chinese? Thanks!
请问什么是 the rate of addition 还有什么是the rate of loss
While as conjunction:
1. a : during the time that, *take a nap while I'm out*
b : as long as, provided that, *while there's life there's hope*
2. a : when on the other hand : WHEREAS *easy for an expert, while it is dangerous for a novice*
b : in spite of the fact that : ALTHOUGH *while respected, he is not liked*
3. similarly and at the same time that *while the book will be welcomed by scholars, it will make an immediate appeal to the general reader?*
the rate of addition to arable lands will drop while the rate of loss rises.
在loss rises发生过程中,addition will drop? As long as loss rises, addition will drop?(好象loss发生在后,并非前提条件,)
所以,这样理解好一些:the rate of addition to arable lands will drop during the time that the rate of loss rises.
参考:og 160.While some propose , others suggest , and still others are calling.
"the rate of addition to arable lands will drop while the rate of loss rise."

11th的解释是:the forecaster is making prediction about two different rates! The forecast changes in the rates can be compared using the construction "the rate of x will drop while the rate of y rises"; "x "and "y "should parallel.
M is among the forecasters who predict that the rate of addition to arable lands will drop while the rate of loss rises.
M预言“当rate of loss上升时,rate of addition将会下降”
while引导条件状语从句,与"the rate of addition will drop并列”
M is among the forecasters who predict that the rate of addition to arable lands will drop while the rate of loss rises.
M预言,“rate of addition下降”,此时rate of loss正在上升。
Longman
I'll just make a phone call while you finish the dishes.
