若是E选项去掉both是否正确

"was rooted" is a little bit different from "rooted".
The former means that the work was rooted in the tradition when Monk was alive. But we don't know wheather the work is still rooted in the same tradition. Maybe it has changed sometime.
"rooted" means the work is being rooted in the tradition all the time.
