lacking进行时，文中读不出有正在进行的意思。whatever意思是无论什么，文章说演奏技术上的欠缺，what的指代已经很清楚了，再来whatever意思有点过，不过我认为这不是主要的，主要还是make up和make up for的区别。

Lack 就像spend,主语永远是人。Lacking: be lacking in是一个固定搭配，主语也永远是人。

The passion with which he played the music more than made up what he lacked in technical skill. 为了强调宾语，将主动句的宾语提前作为被动句的主语。

3,More than=highly，very much等等表示较大程度的程度副词,在这里是个程度副词短语，注意！！than在这里绝对不是一个介词。

例如：我们可以说 He is deeply(greatly/highly/not a little/no end/all too/ever so/more than) impressed. 不管用哪一个都表示 He is deeply impressed.

我觉得还是这个what和whatever里面的文章。除了语气上后者强，还有什么玄机呢？比如说后者在语义上是否发生了变化？用这个more than强调之后，是应该要求用whatever也引导一个强调语气与之配合呢，还是有了more than就不用再强调了呢？

这里没有少 make up for sth的sth.因为这里用的是被动,宾语是提前了

参照ajmclean提供的LONGMAN词条可以知道，lack 作动词时后不能接in/of，那么答案应该是在A和C中选择。我认为A更好些。

B是否可以这样理解：lack后面接的不是in，而是what，只是因为倒装被提前了。还原what所指代的，语序应该变成he lacked something in technical skill。这样理解的话，whatever就不对了，因为whatever是泛指。something需要是特指，所以用what

看了这么多，我最终也没搞清楚这个题目是B还是D。不过我个人觉得，这个题目是不是更多考WHAT 和WHATEVER的指代意思多啊，这个题目在考make up和make up for的差别吗？

lack的意思解决了。其他我没觉得有任何一个人说清楚这个题目的解释了。

小结一下：A C是因为lacking的主语要是人。 B D lack后面是what，不是in
