UIUC不错的, 虽然很荒凉, 但是毕业后任教工作前景不错, 做最坏打算也可以到CHICAGO的大公司里工作, 真是恭喜了

undergradute in economics.

GPA SO SO,

I think they are more inetested in my research experiences. My boss wrote a very generic recommendation talking from personality to research potential, which I think helps a lot.

I would say, it is "really easier" to be admitted if you have done great research!
