the best answer is e, while as to LZM, only the tense is the same, we can use participle, while the answer E here, the tense of main clause is past-"knew", therefore, I think it's wrong, please help me to crack it. thanks

"that winds are designated by the direction from which they come " is mentioned as a scientific priciple, therefore the present tense is available.
