I just had an interview in the Chinese University of Hong Kong yesterday.
As the government is now cutting the fund, Hong Kong government only gives 3-year fund for each PhD student. As I do not have research master degree, I need to spend 4 years. So the interviewers asked me whether I did mind to do 2-year Master of Philosophy firstly and then do 3-year PhD program.
I believe that if I study in MPhi, I can have two more years to prepare my application of U.S. PhD and let my package to be more competitive. So I accept.

Thank you.
One of my professors also suggested me to complete a Mphil degree first and then apply for top business schools in US. It is a good practice to follow.
Where are you? Studying in university in HK? I am now doing MBA in HKUST.

I just got an email from my interviewer. He said he would like me to be a member of his department. However, I am not sure which program he will provide to me. PhD or MPhi???
If MPhi, I will go back to the battle of TOEFL two years later.

Don't worry about Toefl. It is no obstacle for u if u intend to apply for PHD program in US.
Thank you for your advice. But I do not understand why TOEFL is not a barrier. I got only 253 on computer-based. Do you mean TOEFL is not so important if my score can meet the minimum requirement of US schools?
Today, I received an email from my interviewer who asked me I want to choose PhD or Mphil. If I choose PhD, I can only get 3-year financial support. Too risky for me!
