答案：D。请问下这道题为什么不选C呢？我看破解版注释说因为如果省略but后的are，会有歧义让人错误的把but当作介词"除了"的用法，和enhance reproduction or survival这部分结构看作一个小整体，而加上are则必然是连词构成not。。。but 结构。但是我的问题在于，这里not。。。but。。。结构的前半部分not后面是一个名词性短语，作为对称结构，but后面也应该是个名词性短语，这里加上了are会不会显得不对称了呢？请多多指教！

如果按照LS 的解释 a team of scientists found that the noise was not continuous but consisted of individual bursts or pops just thousandths of a second long. 里面but consisted 应该改为but was consisted才对吧。因为前面用的是was not........结构啊。
还是不明白。
我觉得LZ说的是有道理的。
不管从语义上，还是语法上，这个题目选C都不会造成歧义。
只能说D更保险了，它完全避开了可能的错误（就是把but读成enhance reproduction or survival的补充）。尽管这个”可能“好像并不太可能。

同意，突然想起来PREP 破解版上好像说过如果容易引起歧义的话要补出谓语动词，否则不用。
