我觉得AC的区别应该是have never been sighted和never sighted 的区别。
A中，but连接两个平行结构的表达，即are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun 和have never been sighted on the Sun’s poles or equator. 而havenever been意思是“至今还没有太阳两极和赤道附近出现”，have been强调对现在的影响。
而C中的一般过去式则不能表达出“从过去到现在都没有出现的意思”而是表示“在过去某一时间点出现过”，没有了这一个持续性就是原题的逻辑意思错误了。
