Anxious and excited, eventually we gathered in the Zhonghua Hall of Lake View Hotel of PKU for the orientation ceremony on Aug 22, 2009!
It was cool in the early morning, when I arrived the hotel with J.ABC(Name masked by .ABC), there were no faces of acquaintance. As a matter of fact, we have autonomously gathered for 6 times with around 30 Chinese and overseas classmates in Beijing before this commencement. Then, we wondered inside the lobby, down the staircases, just before the registration desk, we found our decent mistress L.ABC. We recognized her because her picture was in our facebook collection, an Excel template of the classmates with names and face pictures collaborated by our dear class coordinator W.ABC and other voluntary classmates. This facebook can help everyone to quickly memorize who's who of the classmates, so that we'll have a good rapid start toward our challenging courses.
L.ABC was totally surprised by her name called. We joked with her saying that she was our debtor and we had been chasing her for long, hah! So the wonderful morning started by this big joke and laughter!
After all the comers finished registration process, the ceremony started by the gentle elegant voice of Dr. Bruce Sterning, International Dean to BiMBA from Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School (VLGMS).
Dr. Sterning made a brief introduction of himself and the program - BiMBA MBA. VLGMS is an internationally reputed school of management with more than 50 years of history, and the main campus for degree education is nearly 600 years. The school has done perfect education to more than 13,000 alumni and to 6,000 plus heads per year in the training program. The cooperation with BiMBA started last year, while it will continue to introduce the best features of the MBA program accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.
Then Dr. Wu Homou, Executive Dean of National School of Development (NSD) of PKU, gave us a speech of the values of BiMBA program and the missions of the school. NSD is developed from CCER, while it will play a broader role in teaching the future business leader of China, as well as extended research of the economic growth of China.
Dr. John Yang was very impressive; he is the US Dean of BiMBA from Fordham University USA. He first unveiled the core values of BiMBA with 3 C-prefix words, Competence, Character and Commitment. Then, he led us to go through the MBA life and challenge by recalling a lot of activities of the former students. We saw the vivid campus life here and experienced the big change of both career and life of the MBA students. We understood that the one-year school life would be very colourful, however, it would arise lots of change and struggle, which would drive our rest part of social existence to a higher profound platform.
Dean of VLGMS, Dr. Philippe Haspeslagh explained us the long term value of MBA experience.
We also had a chance to know the working faculty of the Admissions Office, Career Development Office, Public Relationship Offie and the Academic Office. They will help us easily solve our troubles of the school life.
After a short break, Dr. Sterning raised a few questions for us to discuss:
1. What leads to be admitted by BiMBA?
2. What can help find a good job?
3. How to successfully pursue the MBA degree?
4. How to live a happy life?
By these questions, we understood that a good future is consisted of collective factors. To work hard in a smart way and to have a social-responsible value is a fundamental requirement. Of course, to keep the long healthy career and social achievement, one must manage a good balance of work and life.
The lunch buffet sounded very nice after the 3.5-hour speeches in the morning session, especially the tasty Peking Roast Duck.
As for our full time classmates, we had a few volunteers to lead the class for a pre-program Longrun Garden Campus Tour. We were transferred by the 10 cars of the classmates quickly to the site without being burnt by the strong noon sun. So, thanks to these buddies for their kind help! And thanks to the volunteers for the tourist guide and English introduction of the campus facilities.
At last, with the host of our class coordinator, we started the expected self-introduction session in the big classroom of Wanzhong Building. Everyone was adopting a characteristic and impressive way to describe oneself, so as to be fast memorized by others. We also had a lot of fun during the process, as some mates were so humorous in doing the job with interesting stories of them.
During the self-introduction, our facebook template was also enriched, but yet fully completed. We call for other classmates who didn't complete it to do it on our web platform. So, everyone is able to download a copy to own computer for the easy share of the publicized information of others. We hope this will help us become familiar with each other in the soonest way, because one-year is just too short for us!
