标题: 请教OG12-16

16. Retail sales rose 0.8 of 1 percent in August, intensifying expectations that personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubled that of the 1.4 percent growth rate in personal spending for the previous quarter.

(A) that personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubled that of

(B) that personal spending in the July-September quarter would more than double

(D) of personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubling that of

(E) of personal spending in the July-September quarter, that it would more than double that of

the correct answer is B.

我的问题：would more than double 中的double是动词？more than double又是什么意思呢？

还有，"personal spending" 怎么会double "the 1.4 percent growth rate"呢？这句话应该怎样理解啊？

OG对D选项的解释：altough this option is not technically wrong, it is less clear and graceful than B. 这样的话，that of又是指的什么呢？

that引导非限定性定语从句错误所以排除CE

AD中的that of，如果that就近指代personal spending，就变成personal spending of the 1.41% grouth rate in personal spending，显然句子很臃肿描述不清晰如果指代主句主语retail sales，不合逻辑因为题目比的是上个季度的personal spending跟这个季度的personal spending 所以排除AD 答案选B

double就是翻倍的意思啊 B选项应该就是说这个季度personal spending 把上个季度的personal spending (上个季度的personal spending 比上上个季度的personal spending 增加了1.4%）翻了一倍

应该是这么理解的不过觉得B选项也有不好的地方我觉得应该是这个季度的 personal spending的growth rate 跟上个季度的rate比这样比较清晰这里似乎是在拿 personal spending 与上一年的rate在比觉得不太妥当。。。不过比起别的项还是B最好的

我就觉得这题怪怪的，不明白为什么前面是spending后面是rate。原来如此啊！

再问一下，double是动词的话那more than是修饰double的副词？意思是翻了一倍还要多？

同意B中more than修饰that从句中的谓语double的程度

that从句只是一个普通的主谓宾结构而不是比较结构

同样D中，只是由于expectations of使得其后面的内容不能是主谓结构，从而spending后面只能用现在分词来限定

但偶觉得D中的that不能指代expectations和retail sales，those才可以呀

that应该还是在指代spending吧

that (of the 1.4 percent growth rate) in personal spending for the previous quarter中的of相当于adj定于限定that，当然这种n+(of+n)的结构远不如adj+n>n+that定从

所以personal spending和growth rate并不是两个比较对象，不需要概念对等；它们只是动作发出者和承受者的关系。整个从句可以用被动语态表达：the 1.4 percent growth rate in personal spending for the previous quarter would be more than doubled by personal spending in the July-September quarter.

其实我还有一个疑问，就是OG说expectation后边是还未发生的事，所有要有would这个助动词来表示，但是D里并没有这样的词，为什么说他没有错呢

我的理解，由于是expectation,所以A中的doubled应该是(should,would)double

C的that 指代不明，并且独立成句，缺少连词，是sentence fragment.

D的末尾的that逻辑上指代expectations,所以，指代错误，应该是those

E的末尾2个that不是指代同一件东西，指代错误，另外，没有连接词sentence fragment的错误。

B中的double是动词，比较对象是 personal spending 。由于是根据某一个月的retail sales “rose”的推测，所以应该引入"would "表示可能性。

double可以做为动词。

2、more than double又是什么意思呢？不止1倍

3、还有，"personal spending" 怎么会double "the 1.4 percent growth rate"呢？这句话应该怎样理解啊？

CDE可以很容易排除，AB比较，B更清晰，that of指代不明。

朗文词典的例句：
The church has doubled its membership in the last five years.

不知道大家有没有发现，double的主宾有这样的关系：
the membership of the church
the weight of the baby
the growth rate of personal spending

总结出来就是double作为动词，其主宾应该是拥有和被拥有（或者宾语是主语的属性之一）的关系，如上面的例句，church拥有membership（从its可以看出来是“拥有”）。

而personal spending也同样拥有自己的growth rate（翻成中文就是个人消费的增长率）。
如果句子是personal spending would double its growth rate，就不难理解了
而OG的题目中只是扩充了主语和宾语的内容以及增加了时间概念，就是7-9月这个季度的personal spending would double 上一个季度personal spending的增长率

同问

我也认为that指代的是personal spending，因为这是句子里唯一可以指代的单数名词，但是我认为D是错的，错在重复。

把句子还原：
intensifying expectations of personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubling personal spending of the 1.4 percent growth rate in personal spending for the previous quarter.

原句in personal spending修饰growth rate；
that of代进去以后，变成了growth rate修饰personal spending

最后变成了personal spending (of...) in personal spending，一个没有意义的重复，所以我觉得无论如何都不可能是对的。。。

同意B中more than修饰that从句中的谓语double的程度
that从句只是一个普通的主谓宾结构而不是比较结构
同样D中，只是由于expectations of使得其后面的内容不能是主谓结构，从而spending后面只能用现在分词来限定

因为D不是句子，不可能有助动词，也就是说在语气上是中立的，可以靠句子的意思推测。
其他都是句子，没有助动词就表明了是陈述现在的（现在时）或过去的（过去时）的事实。

其实我还有一个疑问，就是OG说expectation后边是还未发生的事，所有要有would这个助动词来表示，但是D里并没有这样的词，为什么说他没有错呢

个人感觉，逗号后是个修饰成分，所以D expectation+of，后面必须用doubling来修饰，如果用would double，则是run-on了
that 只能指代spending，语法上无错，但介词+复杂结构显然不如that从句好，避免臃肿

我觉得:
在这里double是及物动词，意思为“使加倍”，这样就不需要前后两者的对比，用简单的主谓句表达“某个action或某个事物使得某个数字加倍”，在这里是personal spending in July-September使得growth rate加倍。而more than 为副词，用来修饰double,因此A很正确

B答案： expectations that spending more than double the rate，这时是主谓宾结构，more than 是修饰
D答案， expectations of sepending in 7-9 quarter more than doubling that of 1.4 growth rate in spending for previous quarter.这里面more than就是比较结构了。D答案还是算wordy的。本来曼哈顿里对wordy的解释，就是"answers are wrong ...because they are wordy. If two choices are both grammatically "correct and clear in meaning, but one is more concise than the other, then choose the shorter one"

这个地方double就是动词表示翻倍，more than就是不止翻倍呗。第二个问题，并不是personal spending double了growth rate，你仔细看原文说的是今年的增长率（这里被省略了但是其实是能看懂的，只要你不要一个词一个词的看而从整体去理解意群）比去年的增长率翻番。最后D中的that是有点不明确，但是并不是一个大问题，其实你也可以根据这个把D排除。
