4.     Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on the Sun’s poles or equator.

(A) are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on

(B) are visible as dark spots that never have been sighted on the surface of the Sun

(C) appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although never sighted at

(D) appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun, although never having been sighted atC

(E) appear as dark spots on the Sun’s surface, which have never been sighted on

大全的解释

677, sec19-04

A,B Sunspots are visible ...意思不是很合常识。

C, best. appear on表达书面,专业。省略altough (sunspots are) never sighted

D having been done不论作现在分词还是动名词,在gmat99%都是错。在这里可以认为时态错。

E , which修饰surface错。

og11的解释

The correct parallel structure in the original sentence emphasizes the contrast between where sunspots are found (are visible...Sun) and where they are not (have ever beensighted...equator). Sunsports is the subject of the sentence, are is the verb of the first part of the contrast and have been sighted is the verb of the the second. The adjective visible is a complement and is a parallel to the past participle sighted. Both parts of the sentence conclude with phrases indicating location.The contrast itself is indicated by the conjunction but.

A.correct. This sentence clearly and correctly draws a contrast between where sunspots are found and where they are not

B.Changing the modifying clause so that that never...Sun distorts the meaning of the sentence; the contrast is lost

C.Although typically introduces a subordinate clause, which has a subject and a verb, but here there is no subject and sighted is not a complete verb

D.Although usually introduce a subordinate clause, but there is no subject of the clause and having been sighted is not a complete verb phrase

E.The relative pronoun which should immediately follow its referent; here which illogically follows surface, and its intended referent, either sunspots or dark spots, becomes unclear

A, 错在何处呢?

以前的讨论有如下几点理由:

1、介词at/on的区别。on用于“面”,at用于“点”和“线”,poles是点,equator是线,so , c is the best;

on/at的区别并不大,难道地球上的poles and euqtor就特指南北两极点和赤道那条线么?

2、on the surface of the Sun位置,导致歧义,可能修饰sunspots or dark spots

a中的on the surface of suns修饰的就是dark spots

3、appear主动,are visible 被动,c is the best;

个人觉得,spots都是被观察到的,被动反而比主动更合逻辑;

4、“另外,are visible as dark spots on the surface中on the surface修饰dark spots不合适,事实上,太阳表面并没有dark spots,而只是我们看到的好像有dark spots;”

这个理由如果成立,那c也有相同问题,c的意思难道不是dark spots 同样appear on the surface of sun?

5、“我也选错了,但是后来觉得还是C比较好。因为sun's poles and equator是包含在sun's surface里面的。如果选A,句子就是说黑子在太阳表面看的见,但是在两级和赤道看不见。其实这个句子就有这个从属关系的矛盾。所以还是C好。C的句意应该是太阳黑子出现在太阳表面但是在两级赤道都看不见。这样句子感觉更加有逻辑一些。一点看法。”

看不出c能够解决a所谓从属关系的矛盾

个人觉得,逻辑上讲,a,c意思不一样,

a, sunspots 像太阳表面的dark spots 一样visible,但是在poles和euqator从来没被看到过,前后重心相同,强调转折,对比;

c, although从来没有在poles and equator看到过,但sunspots像dark spots一样appear 在sun's surface,强调主句;

遵从原文的逻辑,a有何不可阿?

OG12-14同题 答案是A,确信无疑

C给的解释是 'Although' typically introduces a subordinate clause, which has a subject and a verb, but  here there is no subject and 'sighted' is not a complete verb phrase.

OG12-14 答案是A

而从这道题的题干所给的原句可以看出,从句的谓语动词是”have been“(are visible as dark spots on the surface of the sun but have never been sighted on),因此也就不符合这个【状语从句省略】的规则。
作者: Aquaflow    时间: 2014-5-31 22:05
状语从句省略的规定是:当从句的主语和主句的主语一致(或者从句的主语为it)时,且从句构成系表关系(即从句中的谓语中包含了be动词)时,在此种情况下可以省去从句的主语和be动词,保留be动词之后的部分,被保留的部分常常为现在分词,过去分词,动词不定式,介词短语,形容词,副词或名词短语。

例如:
While they are visiting the city, they received a warm welcome. 参观那座城市时,他们受到了热烈的欢迎。
注意:此句子中,While they are visiting the city为while引导的时间状语从句,they received a warm welcome为主句。从句和主句的主语都是they,另外,从句的谓语部分是are visiting,其中包含了are这个be动词。现在我们可以做出一个变形。按照上面的原则,就把从句的这个主语和are一起省略掉,如下句:
While visiting the city, they received a warm welcome.
其他例句:
When (he was) asked why he was late, he kept silent. 当他被问到为什么迟到时,他默不作声。
Write to me if (it is) necessary. 如果有必要,就给我写信。
He opened his mouth as if (he was) to speak. 他张开嘴,好像要说话似的。
