我的理解是这样的，仅供LZ参考
先不看前面的，就看这部分
its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and banked with dirt to a height of three to four feet.

poles是被树皮覆盖的，不看either的结构，是插入语，有了and，说明是平行对称，也就说明主语是poles，那么按照上面的结构，后面要是分词形式（其实我一直搞不清楚是分词作状语还是定语言，请牛牛指教），而bank在这里的意思是“倾斜”，用法是bank to，表示“向哪边倾斜”。

其他的答案除了没有这个结构以外，B中的that of很诡异，指代不明
C中的them指代不明
DE中的was是不对称的

先考虑平行结构，排除DE，BC都有代词不如A，有指代不明嫌疑

同意楼上，首先banked要和overlaid平行；排除DE

C：代词them错，banked的主语是its framework

B: as high as that of错，high是形容词，而that of中的that是指代height的，是名词性质，不能和high平行

所以A：banked to a height of 3-4 feet，完美

这里的 "bank" 意思应该是 to pile up; amass: banked earth along the wall. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bank) 所以句子意思是柱子上被灰尘覆盖到3,4 feet那么高。"倾斜“这个意思在这里说不通。

为什么我觉得是独立主格呢，明显framework应该是被overlaid吧，省略了was，然后banked也是，和overlaid平行。
