答案是A, 我觉得是D, 它给D的错误理由是

if substituted…, this substitution…的表达方式啰嗦不简洁；while表达了转折的含义，而原句中由

and连接并列的句子，并没有此含义。

可是我认为相比较这个啰嗦的问题，A的an increase(中心词)怎么能create environmental problems ,应该是usage create problem, 另外while 也不一定表转折的意思~~

if substituted…, this substitution…的表达方式啰嗦不简洁；while表达了转折的含义，而原句中由

and连接并列的句子，并没有此含义。

D错了因为前面用了Whereas 又来一次转折是不对的

另外除了 if substituted…, this substitution…的表达方式啰嗦不简洁 substituted for 什么在substituted?

如果说这里while 也不一定表转折表同时那就成了2个句子了还是不通顺

相比之下选A更好

我觉得这题应该是要选A，我个人觉得A中的and有种表示递进关系的意思，如果用while就表示转折了，不符合逻辑！

D选项主要是错在：
"while if substituted for more traditional fertilizers, this substitution"部分，if从句后面没有主语，这里substituted修饰this substitution.逻辑意思错误。

另外我也认为while用在这里和whereas重复，一个句子中whereas + clause,while + clause. "whereas"&"while"都是连词，显然也是错误的。

不用怀疑官方答案的正确性，我们要做的是研究为什么答案是对的，而不是钻牛角尖想答案可能会是错的。GMAC才是制定游戏规则的人。D选项"while if substituted for more traditional fertilizers, this substitution"部分错误。如果前面是一个modifier（没有主语的），那么逗号后面紧接着的句子的名词就是前面的逻辑主语。这里if没有主语，所以用后面的substituition做主语，2个substitution，错误。
