5.in the 1980's the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice what it was in the 1970's.

这是改过后的句子。有点疑问。it不是用来指代同一个东西吗？那么rate 在1980与1970是同一个东西吗？不应该是that才对吗？请大家指教。

Good question.
有點tricky...
首先the rate of increase of the minority population是United States的, 這個美國的一部份(屬性)
就像LZ的手是LZ 的, 這個LZ 的一部份, 十年後那支手還是LZ的一部份.
所以United States的the rate of increase of the minority population會可以每一年的數量上會不一樣, 可是還是United State的同一個屬性.
不知道LZ明不明白...(表逹能力不太成=.=|||)

來一個prep上的example:
prep2-49: Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.
global economy是全世界的屬性, 10,000 years後global economy還是全世界的屬性, 同一個東東

Ali，我也来补充一下。ＯＧ10－263. 有的时候代词指代还是要从逻辑意思上来分析。要是我说的不对，或者例子不恰当，你们就可以略过了。：）
