答案给的E, 为什么D不对呢

而且to do 不是有目的的含义在里面吗,这个气囊引爆应该是一个突发事件不带有make passenger think the car was on fire这层目的吧?

求高人指教啊

防止气囊膨胀引起的烟，以及（and）防止这种烟给乘客带来着火的假象

烟和带来假象没有目的关系

只有两种关系，要么并列关系，也就是 would appear... and (would) make

要么就是伴随结果关系，would appear...., making...这种烟出现造成了什么什么的结果

假如E是正确答案，那么代入后半句为a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated to make an
                        already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.这样可翻译为当气囊膨胀使乘客想起汽车着火的时候，一股烟将会冲出来。试想，气囊的膨胀怎么会使乘客想起汽车着火呢？

当然是D答案代入后句子翻译为“当气囊膨胀时，一股烟将会冲出来并使乘客想起汽车着火”。

一点愚见：
如果是eliminated the possibility (that....) to make an already terrified passenger think...会让句子有歧义。是减少这种possibility来让人们认为车着火了呢？还是减少这种会让人们认为车着火的可能性呢？我觉得还是D好！

这句话中最关键的问题是把壮语when the bag inflated提前了，如果把壮语放到句子最后，就容易理解得多了。

eliminated the possibility that a burst of smoke would appear to make an
   already terrified passenger think the car was on fire when the bag inflated。

不能用and 是因为用to 强调了烟雾出现的作用（危害）。比如，我们上学为了找工作与我们上学和找工作的意思是不同的。

选E好一点。纠结在D上面好久，有一点想法不知道对不对：

如果选D，则句子为：
..., eliminated the possibility
that a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated and make an
already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.

Possiblity是that从句的先行词，为单数。
如果D选项，则that引领两个Possibilities：a burst of smoke would appear... and (a burst of smoke would) make...
跟单数先行词不一致。

同意这里的说法

不定式表目的强调了烟雾产生时所带来的恐慌，并不是在说气囊本身存在目的，而是说由气囊产生的东西会带来另一些效果。

气囊-->烟雾-->恐慌  但是如果是 气囊-->烟雾&恐慌 就等于是说气囊产生恐慌了 是不准确的

选择d理由：a burst of smoke would appear....and make passenger think....很标准的平行，逻辑上也行得通
不选e的理由：1.to do是表示目的性的，好像冒烟了目的就是让乘客害怕的明显不对；2.之前楼上说的possibility的固定搭配，应该是possibility that/ possibility of/ for (doing) sth. 而千万要记住没有possibility to do （不能跟ability to do混淆了）（关于这个解释看prep08第二部分188题目)

误导 possibility后面只能加of 或者 for 不能用to

其实ideal的情况应该是possibility that smoke would appear when the bag inflated, making an …..
Make做伴随结果状语 但是这里明显没有这样的选项 所以找最能表达这层关系的(结果状语从句)
所以这里用to do不定式来表结果状语 是可以的 只是没有making用的那么多
首先and made应该是不行的 首先make和appear应该都从属于that后面的possibility没有必要用过去式
前面有个inflated也只是过去分词做bag的后置定语 并没有表达过去的意思
但是and make也是不对的 and make最不好就体现在并没有两个句子的从属关系 后面的是前面的伴随结果
所以不要忽略 to do不定式做状语的情况 一般做目的状语或者结果状语_


这里关于大家否定possibility to 的东西
这里的to do应该是做the smoke would appear 的目的状语 而不是possibility后面的内容吧

只有当一坨烟出现的时候才会是游客惊慌
”事物本身不能产生结果，只有事物变化才可以说明问题“，D选项中的烟只是一个东西，只有出现烟才可能使人惊慌

2.   好像做过一些题目在  do and do 和 do to do 之间的时候更加倾向do to do

此处表结果，做结果状语最好。因为膨胀的结果是使terrified passenger认为汽车着火。但是答案中没有这一选项。
E，to make 解释成appear to do,不对，这个短语是看起来像的意思，不能表达这一结果。   解释成 to make表目的更不对，因为表目的必须人做主语

首先我回应对possibility to make的分析，请看字典对possibility的解释如下：

其次，就算有possibility to make的解释，那对于to make，这句话就有两种理解：
1.        按这哥们说的 possibility to make，所以说是有可能性使得乘客受惊
2.        不定式to make做inflated的宾语，表示膨胀是使得乘客受惊的原因
那么这个使得乘客受惊到底是因为膨胀，还是因为可能性？这里就产生了歧义。

而D选项是绝对不会有歧义的，请看我的句子分解：
（SVO部分加粗，Modifiers按级别用{[(< >)]}分解，蓝、绿色为不同从句级别的SVO）

Make是和appear平行的，共同作为smoke这个that从句的谓语动词，表示smoke要做的两件事情（would是虚拟语气appear和make的助动词，表示对不太可能发生的事情的推测）:

2.        延使得乘客受惊
逻辑语义上也确实是烟雾才会使得乘客受惊，包bag不会使得乘客受惊，可能性possibility这个抽象名词也不会使得乘客受惊

呵，这题果然是万年的D和E之争啊 虽然是神坑，但是这题的的确确就是选E，想平行的同学们都断错句了~

我们首先把答案代入原题看看句子是咋样子的：

D: ...a burst of smoke would appear ... and make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.
E: ...a burst of smoke would appear ... to make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.

这就是题目坑人的第一点：when the bag inflated并不是主句的内容，考虑时应先忽略掉。

提取主句后就能看见差别了：

D: 因为and作为连词，appear和make是同级的。所以这句应该翻译为：「 a burst of smoke会出现，以及a burst of smoke让一个本来就惊恐的旅客以为车子着火了」
E: 这里我们应该理解成 【a burst of smoke would appear】to make，即「a burst of smoke会出现，让一个本来就惊恐的旅客以为车子着火了」

发现两者的差别了么！！！D选项把一个原本应该一体的句子割裂开来了，表达并不准确；E 的表达明显比前者要更为连贯合理。


让我猜猜以后会有多少人能点开到第6页看不同的讨论~

同意这个观点

但是E中的to，会不会造成歧义？虽说when the bag inflated是时间状语从句，但是 to make 到底是hi紧跟主句的would appear还是紧跟inflated？这里没有任何标志可以做出关于to make所属的判断。
如果选E，对于to make的理解可以有两种，
第一种理解：smoke出现让乘客恐慌
第二种理解：smoke在bag inflated的时候出现，这个inflate造成了乘客恐慌

所以排除了你说的possibility that to 的问题以后，我认为 E 的错误在于上述的歧义

这个纯粹是语义问题吧。。。

如果按你所说，to跟inflated，那这个句子后半截是：... the bag inflated to make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.

是充气袋膨胀让旅客认为车子着火了呢，还是烟雾的出现让旅客认为车子着火呢？The answer is plain and simple~ 你认为的第二种理解过度联想了，to跟bag inflated的话讲的就是bag，其影响范围仅仅在when...这个分句里，和主句的smoke已经无关了。

错误
A： and marking 不平行
B: so that it could make 破坏了句子重心
C: and made不平行
E: to make意思不对。假如是to make, 意思：a burst of smoke ... to make ...to think the car was on fire （目的不合适。

根据RON视频中的说法，and只能平行连接两个独立的动作。

這道題我覺得答案是D。
以下探討一下獨立出現的不定詞短語to V 跟平行邏輯語意的看法。

（皆以正確句舉例）

V1 and V2的平行有兩種情況：1. 列舉獨立事件 （這個大家很熟悉了） 2. 表直接的先後因果（這個就是這題的用法）

舉一個平行動詞表直接因果的正確句子：

句意上「天氣回暖」跟「暖天氣讓水果爛掉」是有直接因果關係的，而非獨立事件。

原形動詞make表示其與前面的appear平行，主詞為a burst of smoke，
核心句意為：「a burst of smoke would appear ... and make an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire.」
appear跟make有沒有因果呢？「一陣煙出現」「使人認為車子著火了」，常理可以理解的因果對吧？
這就是平行動詞的「表先後因果」用法。
而這句的make主詞為a burst of smoke，句意為「一陣煙使人認為車子著火」。好，這句話也記得。

最後，讓我們來把剛剛分析to V的最後一句拿過來對照。
E：「氣囊膨脹讓人認為車子著火」
D：「一陣煙讓人認為車子著火」

哪個更合理？不言自明了吧。
因此個人認為這題答案是D。原GWD參考答案有誤。

剛剛做了PREP這禮拜剛出的EXTENSION PACK 擴充包，都是新題做得膽戰心驚，還好最後考了750。
剛好遇到這題被GMAC從GWD收錄進PREP，附上截屏證明官方答案是像我上篇帖子分析的一樣，是D，這串帖子也該到這邊收尾了吧哈哈哈

当巨佬们讨论选D还是E的时候，我................我选的是C，并且找半天不知道为啥不能用made..........感觉自己拖了CDer的后腿
