1.        In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.

(A) twice as fast as

(B) twice as fast as it was in

(C) twice what it was in

(D) two times faster than that of

(E) two times greater than

it was in the 1970's 应该不是句子,it指代rate,in the 1970's修饰rate

这道题里,twice as fast as it was in, 我觉得错误是因为rate of increase不能用fast来修饰,number is twice, 或者 increase twice as fast as

The key here is that we cannot use fast (or slow, for that matter) for rate--we don't say a fast or slow rate, do we? Isn't it more natural to say a high or low rate?

I call these "measurement" words, and they come up from time to time in ETS grammar. For example, we don't say a hot temperature, we say a high temperature, right?
The correct answer provided is C.
