404. In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s. C
(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in 相当迷惑性!
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of(C)
(E) two times greater than
These workers produce at a very fast
rate.
But information technology continues to develop at a very fast
rate.
ast data
rate, up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps) or over.

I'd go for B coz the "what" and "it" in C sound redundant. They both indicate "rate"
Another example in prep2:
61. (27648-!-item-!-188;#058&003611)
Researchers in Germany have unearthed 400,000-year-old wooden spears from what it appears was an ancient lakeshore hunting ground as stunning evidence of human ancestors who systematically hunted big game much earlier than believed.
(A) it appears was an ancient lakeshore hunting ground as stunning evidence of human ancestors who
(B) it appears had been an ancient lakeshore hunting ground and is stunning evidence that human ancestors
(C) it appears to have been an ancient lakeshore hunting ground and is stunning evidence that human ancestors
(D) appears to be an ancient lakeshore hunting ground, stunning evidence that human ancestors
(E) appears that it is an ancient lakeshore hunting ground, stunning evidence of human ancestors who

Hmm...it seems like that "fast rate" is okay...since P2-137 uses "slow rate of technology spending".
Blaming its recent troubles on a widening recession and slow rate of technology spending, the computer company announced that it would cut 10 percent of its workforce--more than 2,000 jobs--and expected to report a loss in its third quarter.

rate of increase of the minority population of the United States

what 取代了 it was 后面具体的数字

说说我的想法:先抛开fast能否修饰rate,看这道题B虽然最具有迷惑性,但是大家注意到没有 In the 1980’s 是修饰整句话的而非 the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States 这一个短语。即A was twice(what A was in 1970's)in1908's.

不过斑竹大人举例子的确what啰嗦——what it was X.

in this case, you have a problem of redundancy:
a RATE can't be FAST.
* the rate can be high;
* the increase itself can be fast.
similarly,
a height can't be tall (a person can be tall, or a height can be greater than...)
a bank account can't be rich (a person can be rich, or a bank account can contain a large amount of money)
etc.
我之前也理解为the rate of increase of the minority...was是个句子,所以和it was in 1970's比较。
A is twice as big as B。不能把A is当作句子来比较,因为be twice as…as是短语固定搭配实际上是A与B两个名词在比较。如果A do is twice as…as B do才是句子和句子比较(但是结构有点不对)所以,我这么理解的哈理解,as…as多半是名词做比较。

He is TWICE AS tall AS Alex [is].
