标题: statement of purpose一定要用两倍行距么？

写了大概1200字左右，用的是Arial，11

这样调了下刚好可以控制在两页以内，但是如果用两倍行距的话就变成了4页了。

向大家咨询：用两倍行距比较好？还是一倍行距？

另外用times new roman，好像最节约空间，一般教授喜欢看times new roman还是Arial呢？

对了，学校没有特别要求用什么行距和格式，但是看版上好多人以前都是说双倍行距，不知道是不是最好选双倍行距呢？？宁可让他有个4页的

貌似你写的ps有一点多，我记得是两杯行距，然后2页。不是特别确定，你在check下

double space, four pages, that's ok. PS is usually between 1000-1500 words.

I definitely strongly suggest using double space. In terms of font it's really hard...... I know quite some professors really hate that font for no reason......

but don't worry, they won't choose you or not choose you because of that kind of style of the essay.

另外，比较了下，我也不是很喜欢times new roman，难道是这个字体太端正了？感觉Arial好看些！

An American professor, my referee, told me not to worry about the lenghth of PS， just ensure you demonstrate your research potential. My PS is 2800 words.

Use Font 12. Either Times New Roman or Ariel is fine (I prefer the former one)

I think 2800 words are tooooooooooooo long. "Don't worry about the length" doesn't mean you can get that long...

To be honest, the best essays I have read are all very concise. If you cannot tell the story in less than 1500 words, your writing sucks....

I would say a good PS will be at most 1 page and half single space if you use font 11. Actually, I guess the program coordinator won't spend more than 3 minutes to read your PS. CV is more important IMHO.

An econ prof. says that he goes to read ps only when he needs a laugh....that makes me rethink the importance of personal statement.....sigh...I used to believe that it was really important....-_-

嗯，我现在也觉得写多了感觉反而有点思路不清楚，1-2页感觉比较容易接受。给别人看，人家也看得下去

ok, if you print out your online application. You'll see four things on the first page:
your school name, your gpa, your gmat score, and your recommendor list.

And they only need to glance over the first page to get an idea good enough about who they want to consider......

One more thing about ps is, I still believe if you have an exceptional ps, it may move the readers. However, this situation is rare, since we Chinese are not in general good writers of ps....so don't rely on that...but worth trying.

也许在最后到了shortlist会稍微看下PS, 不要大跌眼镜就行, 和CV RL一致比较好

1000 - 1500 words would be enough, if you have a very solid research idea, then submit a research proposal separately

the existence of PS already means that it could not be unimportant...the thing is, if you can not write an excellent PS that makes you stand out, try not to write a lousy PS that makes you stood out.

well, transcript and reputation of the school are definitely important, but the key is can you change it? so, focus on what you can change.

totally agree with xiaopanghu.

不过要*单*靠ps来stand out的（就是说推荐信学校都默默无闻的），我觉得还是要陶瓷来配合的，不然你的ps可能还没有被看到，你的application就被扔掉了。。。。。。反正要做点什么让你的ps被好好读到。

from a phd friend at b-school，大意讲：

有时候时间很紧的时候，不可能所有申请都看。小秘就做初审工作，把所有牛推荐的申请留下。在剩下的申请里面，先定个学校的line,比如top50（这个数字纯粹做例子，可以忽略）以下的扔掉，然后定个gmat分数的line，比如650以下的扔掉（这个数字也是我拿来纯粹作例子的）。剩下的申请大家拿回来分一分赶快看。

garamond is very elegant

I might use Times New Roman, 12, 1.5 space(maybe double is better, but I just think it is too spacious)...just be common,hoho

2800 is much too long, cut it by half, if it is me.

I think 1000 is standard.

看了各位的讨论，收获很大，多谢。

刚才看了一下我的SoP, 字数为899。

用双倍行距，12 Times New Roman后是4页，好像符合大家所说的字数要求。

但是有一点不是很明白，在这里借用LZ的帖子请教一下大家。

关于内容呢，因为我花了5个月时间在我老师的指导下写了篇working paper.

然后，我在SoP里用了1/3的篇幅描述了关于写这篇paper所遇到的问题和解决方法。

还有，因为我老师在研究方面对我影响比较大，可以说是他把我带上研究这条路，

所以，我在SoP里头也三次提到了他，不知这样是否可以？

最好不要写太多论文的东西：
1。这篇文章不一定符合招生老师兴趣
2。其次这篇文章也不是你独立写的，而且文章水平如何也难说，除非你老师是超大牛
