楼上的提醒让我多想了一些：by/through+doing中的doing虽是动名词，但是更强调动作，因而动词>名词；这不同于另外一种强调名词性的动名词，比如the increasing of costs>the increase of costs
可以这样认为麽？
umm...increase in cost，不能用of。
illness是一直在prevent的，所以用现在分词， worker performance是一次性提高的，而且已经提高了，所以用过去分词。
preventing在此不是动名词，是现在分词。

我也有这个疑问
我觉得是prevent这个动作是公司主动去完成的，
但improve是员工来完成的，公司是主动的去provide air, improve performance则是员工主动的反应。
所以要用被动的过去分词~~
不知对否，请NN指正~~~
用in ....prevention 有种在这个prevention里节省的意思。。
