The period when the great painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira were occupied by Upper Paleolithic people has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animal.
A has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are
B has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine is
C 略
D 略
E 略
白勇说B对,因为what在从句中做主语,所以determine后用is,A中的are错

白勇是这么说的:
2)what充当宾语时,主句谓语动词由主句谓语动词后的名词决定
不过,没见过这样的例子啊.

6. (24681-!-item-!-188;#058&001533)
From studies of the bony house of the brain, which is the cranium, located in the back of the skull, come what scientists know about dinosaur brains.
(A) From studies of the bony house of the brain, which is the cranium, located in the back of the skull, come what scientists know about dinosaur brains.
(B) The knowledge that scientists know about dinosaur brains comes from studies of the bony house of the brain, located in the back of the skull, that is, the cranium.
(C) The knowledge of dinosaur brains that scientists have come from studies of the bony house of the brain, which is located in the back of the skull and is called the cranium.
(D) What scientists know about dinosaur brains comes from studies of the cranium, the bony house of the brain located in the back of the skull.(D)
(E) Located in the back of the skull is the cranium, the bony house of the brain, and it is from studies of this that scientists know what they know about dinosaur brains.
这题what在从句中做know about的宾语
按照白勇的规则:what在从句充当宾语时,主句谓语动词由主句谓语动词后的名词决定
但是,主句谓语动词comes(应该是comes吧?)和后面的名词 studies of the cranium数不一样啊!?
prep 解释给出的规则是:what引导的名词从句作主语,谓语动词用单数形式

要看what到底是要表示一個單數還是複數去決定謂語的單複
3rd floor的question(其實是OG10#211)比較容易決定:
What is....is...
What are...are...
因為what是what從句的主語也是主句的主語, 所以從句跟主句的單複一定會一致
6th floor的question比較難決定:
what是know about的object, 同時是主句的subject.

恩...what从句作主语,what在从句里作宾语的情况,确实要看逻辑意思了...
prep2-6那个题如果没有任何背景因素就那么一个句子,我想我们无法判断主句谓语动词用单数还是复数的...
白勇第二句话确实总结得不对。

但是这个题注意,宾语并不是studies这个复数,而是from studies of这个介词词组,所以应该视为单数。所以用comes。
The subject in this clause is a clause itself – What scientists know about dinosaur brains. The verb is – come. The object is – from studies of the bony house of brain. Since clause as subject is always singular, the verb – come should be comes – singular. Thus this sentence has SV – Number error.

放上我刚刚总结的主语从句的语法点:
1. that引导的主语从句
a. that在句中不做成分。当主语从句位于句首时,不能省略:
That he likes books of this kind is very interesting.= It’s very interesting (that) he likes books of this kind.
b. 当谓语动词是seem,appear,be a pity.be a wonder,be likely等时,使用形式主语It ,而将真正的主语放在句尾,这时从属连词that可省略:It appeared to scientists on earth (that) the stars had moved.
2. Whether/if引导的主语从句
a. 表不确定的主语从句位于句首的时候则必须用whether,不能用if.
b. 如果用It 作形式主语时 ,whether和If都可以引导主语从句。
3. what引导的主语从句(其实是连接代词/连接副词啦)
a. what 引导主语从句,在从句中充当主语、宾语。
What he often holds in his hand is a dictionary. = He often holds a dictionary in his hand.
b. who,whatever, whoever, whose, who 可引导主语从句,在从句中充当成分。
c. Where/when/how/why也可引导主语从句, 在从句中充当状语。
d. 注意that和what引导主语从句时候的区别:that不做成分,what做成分:
What you said about him makes him sad. what在主语从句中做said的宾语
That you don’t like him makes him sad. that在主语从句中不做成分
4. 注意使用主语从句时,主句的谓语动词单复数。基本原则是,一般用单数(因为是一个从句么,从句一般都是单数);但是如果根据主句上下文确定是复数,那么谓语动词也应该用复数。
a. (OG)What scientists know about dinosaur brains comes from studies of the cranium, the bony house of the brain located in the back of the skull.
这里what scientists know about dinosaru brains这个主语从句后面的谓语动词应该用单数(comes)。
b. 另外一个OG/PREP例子:
What is much more difficult to determine is the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.
这里的主语从句的单复数由reason来决定(因为reason是主句的宾语)所以用is
c. What I need is money./What I need are books. 这里what I need这个主语从句后面的谓语动词应该根据后面的名词来决定(IT is money/THEY are books),所以一个用is, 一个用are
4. 如果由and连接两个或两个以上的主语从句作主语时,谓语动词用复数;由两个或多个连接词引导一个主语从句,谓语动词用单数。
When they will start and where they go have not been decided yet.
When and where the meeting will begin has not been decided .

http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/substantive-clauses-on-the-gmat/
总的来说:
In general, when a substantive clause is the subject of a sentence, it is generally construed as singular and takes a singular verb.
Here’s the exception. If the substantive clause begins with a relative pronoun —- who, whom, what, where, whoever, whomever, whatever, wherever — then whether the clause is singular or plural depends on whether the relative pronoun itself is understood as singular or plural.
