标题: [求助]GWD-8-Q41，糊涂了~less 0r few?

When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950’s, some 4,000 existed in the United States, but today there are less than one-quarter that many.

A. there are less than one-quarter that many

B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many

C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount

D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount

E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

答案是C。D错在哪儿呢？

我想问下few,less的用法以及amount和number的用法。

NN能帮忙总结一下么？

为什么B不对
drive-ins是可数名词，所以可以马上排除A,D和E; amount是用来修饰不可数名词的，number是修饰可数名词的，所以排除C)

A, less 修饰不可数名词, 不能用来修饰drive-ins;且不管他的意思，实际上题干中把他作为可数名词了，从were的使用可以判断．

B, 正确,there are fewer than one-quarter as many是省略表达，如果完整的还原的话就是: there are fewer than one-quarter as many drive-ins as are there in the 1950's

C, fewer和that amount不能对应, amount 是用来修饰不可数的.

D, the number 和the amount对应，逻辑混乱,怎么可以说一个number是一个amount呢, 另外the amount 是修饰不可数名词的,不能用来修饰drive-ins

E, it 指代不清, less 修饰不可数名词, 不能用来修饰drive-ins

还是不明白as many用在这里的作用，不过底下的解释是选择B的，我刚从网上google来得，

可以借鉴。

Drive-ins are countable, so they take countable modifiers. Eliminate A, D, and E because they use "less" instead of "fewer."

Between B and C, "amount" is used for uncountable nouns (compare "amount of sand" to "number of books"), so that eliminates C.

I'd go with B. It correctly uses "fewer" and "many" to refer to a countable noun, "drive-ins."

有没有大N再接再厉，解释一下as many在这里的用法？？

A解释有点疑问

there are less than one quarter that many

这里less修饰的是one quarter 不应该用drive-in是否可数来判断吧

D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount （the number 和some 4.000概念不对等）

E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount（it无指代）

2.as many as. A phrase used to qualify the meaning of many as a very large number, depending on what follows it. For example, You can take as many pens as you need. [Late 1300s] Also see as ... as; as much as.
