选择D, 请问为什么不选A? this 不能指代 this success 吗？不是更简洁吗？

Even astronomers were amazed at the success of the Neptune flyby, which produced a photograph of a previously undetected moon; this is likely to result in increased governmental support for the hitherto neglected U.S. space program.

"This" can be refer to "the success of .." or "a photgraph of ..". To avoid ambiguity,  to "this success" is much more clearly and precisely.

which reflects ..., "which" refers to a single noun, a state.  but a state reflects the fact that ..... 逻辑意思不合理

which reflect ... which 指代 forty newspapers ,  forty newspapers reflect the fact that ... 逻辑意思不合理

要强调的是数字说明了一个事实, 不如直接说 that number reflects ...意思合理, 清晰.
