The period when the great painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira were occupied by Upper Paleolithic people has been establish by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.

为什么用 is, 不用are. 从句子意思上来说， what is much more difficult to determine 指的是三个东西呀。

不是吧，reason, use, 和meaning应该是并列的呀。

是不是： what are more difficult to determine are.....
what is more difficult to determine is..... 这样用的呀？

"what (sentence)....." is generally followed by "is", regardless how many items are cited in the following phrase.

谢谢。不过这下我可糊涂了。那有没有 what are difficult to determine are A， B and C. 的句型。是不是没这种用法?

这题我也选了b。现在看来是不是因为后面是一个定语从句修饰their decoration的原因啊？不然的话，最后的定语从句该怎样解释啊？但如果是定语从句，对于它的意思，我还是糊涂。

或者是for后面整个修饰the reason ，所以用is？

蓝色修饰红色，绿色修饰第一个蓝色。这样意思和语法就都通了，对否？

"What is much more difficult to ... is" is absolutely right and mostly used; "What are much more difficult to ... are" maybe right (at least some people use it), but "What is much more difficult to ... are" is incorrect.

BTW WHAT clause is normally used as a single

What 引导的名词性从句做主语－主句谓语动词由 be 动词后的名词决定。

What 在句中做主语：What is… is…. / What are … are…

e.g. What is difficult to understand is A.；What are difficult to understand are A and B.
