975.        Puritan fanatics brought to civil and military affairs a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it.

(A) but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(B) but which were in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(C) but which were in fact natural outgrowths of it

(D) but it was in fact a natural outgrowth of them（C）

(E) which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

 

这道题我选D，我认为it指代religious zeal，them指代military affairs。
            正确答案中but后面应该是跟一个完整的句子的，而不是定语从句，选择C，我不理解

which指代a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose

这部分是brought的宾语，这句话意思是Puritan fanatics带来了a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose， 但实际上a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose是从it自然产生的。因为a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose是两个东西，所以which后面跟复数。it应该是指their religious zeal。them=their指代some writers。
