标题: Prep1-114 不懂為何用more so than
114. A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more than when retiring completely.
(A) more than when retiring
(B) more than if they were to retire
(C) more so than those who retired
(D) which was more so than those retiring
(E) which was more than if they had retired
答案是(C) 但是我不懂為什麼有more so than 這種用法?

逗号后面的部分作状语,相当于women(逻辑主语)more reported high marital satisfaction(so) than those who retired,比较结构。

A study...found that...women(who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers) (were)reported high marital satisfaction, more (were) reported high marital satisfaction than those who retired completely.
我在做这道题时就以为是women1 more than women2,后来想想so其实就是要表达这种high marital satisfaction的比较。
A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more than those
who retired completely.

A省略了(THEY ARE) , 和 B的错误差不多, 如果补齐了就是
MORE SO 的SO直代的是是(REPORTED HIGH MARITAL SATISFCATION)

a study...found that women...(were) reported high marital satisfaction,如果这里没有were的话,women应该是study的对象,应该是被report的啊?

在一个对家庭生活得study里面,women叙述或呈现(report:to relate or tell about; present)了更大的满足感.

个人认为此题的比较对象不是satisfaction,而是women之间的比较,但是比较结果不是谁有更高的satisfaction,而是report satisfaction的次数(我认为,除了比较对象,我们还应该关注比较结果),因为如果比较的结果是satisfaction的话,原句应该用higher来修饰它,变为我们最经常看见的比较结构的结构:women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported higher marital satisfaction, than those who retired completely.(因为原句的宾语satisfaction抽象名词,逻辑上不会跟women混淆,所以应该不用补出谓语动词);但是原句用了more than来修饰比较结构,所以我认为比较对象应该是women who...more reported high satisfaction than so those who retired completely,就如上面的NN说得,So指代reported high satisfaction。

A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more so than those who retired completely.
个人理解本句应该是比较不同妇女(women1,women2)在不同情况下(took new jobs after retiring, retire completely)的satisfaction。所以so指代satisfaction,只是不明白的是,如果将so的指代内容代入后句,变成more satisfaction than those who retired,那不变成了satisfaction和人those(即women2)比么?

It is used in making a "more than" type of comparison where you also want to refer to a previously stated verb / action (that's where the "so" comes in). In this case, the "so" refers to "reported high marital satisfaction."
Notice here that you are comparing two groups of women: those who take new jobs, and those who retire completely. When making a comparison, you have to make sure you explicitly mention both groups.
B, C, and D don't do this. (In fact, B and D change the original meaning of the sentence to make the second part of the comparison a hypothetical - but the original meaning is that the ones who take new jobs are being compared to those who don't.)
Also remember that, for comparisons, they two things / groups / whatever compared should be parallel. "women who took" and "those who retired" are parallel. The other options aren't.
the rule i like to use here is this: if it's not a specific NOUN that can be replaced by a PRONOUN (usually "it"), then use the all-purpose replacement "...so".
perhaps the most common usage in which you'll see this is "do it" vs. "do so":
wrong: i've always wanted to jump out of a plane, but i've never had the chance to do it. --> this is wrong because the only possible antecedent for "it" is plane, and it doesn't make any sense to talk about "doing" a plane.
correct: i've always wanted to jump out of a plane, but i've never had the chance to do so. --> "do so" = jump out of a plane.
you would extend this same type of extra freedom to "more so": if the comparison isn't quite parallel, and/or is ambiguous, without the "so", then go ahead and toss it in there; it doesn't have to have a single-word antecedent

more (women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers ) so (=reported high marital satisfaction ) than those retired completely.

此题中的more than when retiring completely是状语结构修饰的是reported,而不是你们认为的同位语结构,同位语补充后有很多漏洞women who...和more than when...
我的看法如下:还原句子后的结构应该是women reported high marital satisfaction more than those who retired. 但是答案里面有逗号,所以还原后为women reported high marital satisfaction, more so(reported high marital satisfaction) than those who retired.
