标题: OG 186，有关instead of 和rather than 的用法
186. Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to a hotel.
(A) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to
(B) that would have allowed members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of confined to
(C) under which members of the jury are allowed to go home at the end of each day instead of confining them in
(D) that would allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than confinement in

答案是E。
我的疑问有三点：
1、OG中的解释认为：to go home 与be confined to平行，逻辑主语是members of the jury.但如果我们选A，to allow 和to cofine them to也可以平行，逻辑主语是motion. 这样不是也应该可以吗？
2、instead of 和rather than 在用法上究竟有什么区别？觉得OG的解释中从来没有提到二者有区别，但也从来没有选过含instead of的选项，真有点奇怪。
3、a motion that后面的从句是不是应该用虚拟语气？
一道题就有这么多问题，看得我都没信心了，请大家多多指点。

----> problem is not parallelism. but, 'instead of' can only be followed by nouns (my perspective) while 'rather than' is more widely used

instead of是介词，后面只能加名词或名词性短语，所以ABC全部排除，D应该是allow sb to do rather than to do, rather than 后面如果是confinement就没办法和to go home 平行，所以只剩下了E。我以前觉得E有歧义，是J allow members to go home 还是motion allow members to go home后来仔细看题后发现E说的是J denied a motion to allow members ……to allow 的动作发出者只能是人，不可能是motion，motion是不可能发出带有目的性的动作的（to do sth）所以E项也没有歧义，完美~

讲的很清楚，完美~但是allow sb to do rather than do（be confined）这样是不是前后就不平行了？

这里省略了to，GMAT里面经常省略to。。。 allow sb to do rather than （to）do。。
然后这道题是这样的
1、instead of +ving/n. 但是在gmat里面只喜欢用n.，如果用动词，那么gmat prefer用rather than，rather than后面动词原形或者ving都可以。 哪怕主句的动词是过去式。
例子：
Instead of buying stocks and bonds, which is the more conventional approach for someone new to
financial planning, real estate has become increasingly attractive to young people looking for a first investment.
Instead of buying stocks and bonds, which is the more conventional approach for someone new to financial planning, real estate has become increasingly attractive to young people as a first investment.

2、楼主说的 to allow和to confine them平行文我也想过。我觉得这样平行当然没有问题。但是问题是，to allow them 后面还有一个to 的不定式，to go home，这样的话，和这个后面的不定式平行会有歧义，变成allow them to confine them。允许他们自己限制自己。而E是没有这个歧义的 allow them to be confined 很清楚是陪审团的人被限制。只是很tricky地省略了to。
to不定式在gmat中经常省略这一点要记住。

(D) exhibit and thereby activate （key）省略了 (to) activate
(E) exhibit which, as a result, activates是touch这个动作activate而不是exhit自己能activate
3、看到不定式就要想到有没有歧义
The United Parcel Service plans to convert its more than 2,000 gasoline-powered trucks in the Los Angeles area to run on cleaner-burning natural gas.
- (A) to convert its more than 2,000 gasoline-powered trucks in the Los Angeles area to （key）
- (B) to convert its more than 2,000 trucks in the Los Angeles area that are powered by gasoline to【 to前面有个that，会有修饰歧义，变成 to后面的不定式也是修饰这2000个trucks】
- (C) on converting its more than 2,000 gasoline-powered trucks in the Los Angeles area that will
- (D) for its more than 2,000 gasoline-powered trucks in the Los Angeles area to convert to
- (E) that its more than 2,000 trucks in the Los Angeles area that are powered by gasoline will convert to

The "of" in "instead of" is a preposition, and its object must be a noun. Thus, "instead of" can only be used to compare single nouns, and the GMAT Sentence Correction seems to avoid even this use. The GMAT also seems to avoid the "instead of" [gerund] structure. The "than" in "rather than" is a subordinate clause, so the structure "rather than" is considerably more flexible in what can follow it.
