More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake

(B) With 20 percent of the world's fresh water, that is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined, Siberia's Lake

(C) Siberia's Lake

答案:A

问题:

prep对于这两题的解释明显存在矛盾,98题(prep解释为E的错误在于more than不是合理的同位语结构,所以用a drop概括前面部分的意思,构成独立主格);33题(prep解释为A的more than结构是很好的同位语结构),按照我的理解,是否应该把答案改成 the quantity more than all the North American Great Lakes combined ?

33. more than 300 rivers

然后后面的more than all the North American Great Lakes combined就是作同位语修饰20 percent of the world's fresh water

d中的which, 确实是有歧义,不知道是修饰谁,可以是fresh water, 可以是world's fresh warter,还可以是20% world's fresh warter

More than all the North American Great Lakes combined, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water.

98 中a drop 概括了 decline from ... to 这个过程,所以要用 a drop 对全句概括;而33题more than ... 20 percent of the world's fresh water, 而不是与holds 20% of ...

关于33题E选项,more than all the North American Great Lakes combined 是不能修饰紧接的的Lake Baikal的: 首先combined是过去分词,受动者是All NA Great Lakes,而不是Lake Baikal; 其次,逻辑上more than all ... 20% of the World's fresh water,

Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water more than all the North American Great Lakes.

那么如果是lake Baikal与all the North American Great Lakes相比,产生歧义,没有补足助动词。如果将20 percent of the world's fresh water与all the North American Great Lakes相比,比较对象不对等。

A decade after initiating the nation's most comprehensive and aggressive antismoking program,  California has seen per capita consumption of cigarettes decline from over 125 packs annually to about 60, a drop more than twice as great as that in the nation as a whole.

如果D省去a drop,more than短语可以在句末作状语修饰主句动词seen,逻辑不对。

20 percent of the world's fresh water,因为20 percent of是量词

(D) With more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake
Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

20 percent of the world's fresh water 应该与 20 pounds of water从结构上没有什么区别吧。

More than all the North American Great Lakes combined修饰20 percent water, 意思是BAIKAL的水比5大湖的水加起来要多,而E选项中More than all the North American Great Lakes combined用来修饰5大湖,意思是BAIKAL比五大湖加起来要多,逻辑意思不合理。

Hi All,

Following is one of the right answers of GMAT Prep question:

Can someone please help me understand how the following comparison is complete. Don't we need "that of" before "all" to complete the comparison.

===========================================
More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
==============================================

There are some examples in OG where it clearly say that in order to complete the comparison we need to have that/those. Can some one please tell why the same is not the case here ?

=============================================

The original question is copy pasted below for quick reference. The OA is "A"

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

A. More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

B. With 20 percent of the world's fresh water, that is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined, Siberia's Lake Baikal has more than 300 rivers that drain into it.

C. Siberia's Lake Baikal, with more than 300 rivers draining into it, it holds more of the world's fresh water than all that of the North American Great Lakes combined, 20 percent.

D. While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

E. More than all the North American Great Lakes combined, Siberia's Lake Baikal, with more than 300 rivers draining into it, holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water.

We would have used the relative pronoun "that" to refer to fresh water, if we were comparing fresh water.. Here the case is that we are not comparing fresh water capacity of lake baikal with that of other north american lakes..

we are just comparing the total capacity of lake baikal.. its a special quality of lake baikal tht it holds fresh water...

Let's say the total number of litres of the world's fresh water = 100
then Lake baikals capacity out of hundred = 20
Let's say that total capacity of north american lakes = 18

Now all we are saying is that "More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 litres of fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

and so you can see that we don't need to use the relative pronoun..

2.

yeah, ok, i see what you're saying. that's a very good question.

here's what's going on here:
"more than all the North American Great Lakes combined" is actually a MODIFIER of "20% of the world's fresh water", which is WITHIN the first MODIFIER. therefore, it's a SUB-modifier, so to speak.

let me try to illustrate it graphically:

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal(, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water(, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined)).

the blue modifier modifies stuff that's inside the orange modifier, so it falls within the orbit of the orange modifier; it MUST be removed if the orange modifier is removed (because it has nothing left to modify).

let me know whether this makes sense.

orange and blue: go gators!

(注:是A中的后一个more than,不是前一个,请看清prep语法笔记)

这里的比较对象A和B,B肯定就是 all the North American Great Lakes combined. 至于C选项除去prep笔记提到的错误,“it holds more of the world's fresh water than all that of the North American Great Lakes combined, 20 percent” 比较也不对,有歧义:到底是(it holds) more of the world's fresh water than( all that of the North American Great Lakes combined did)还是it holds more (of the world's fresh water )than (all that of the North American Great Lakes combined),()内为比较对象。
其实 the North American Great Lakes combined就是指 the North American Great Lakes合起来的水

把more than 20% 肢解四散到各处,导致more of xxx,比较级后不能用of表示范围,最高级才可以——He is tallest of the three,不可说He is taller of the three.,

E 一开篇的比较结构用的是多功能的more(原级有many, much,还可加在不能加er/est 的形容词、副词前表比较),而且没有额外补充说明比较的范畴,使人摸不着头脑:到底什么比五大湖多呢?

Longer than any other rivers in China, Changjiang ....

More fresh water than all the NorthAmerican Great Lakes combined, More sendiment of minerals than all the NorthAmerican Great Lakes combined,

(C) California's annual per capita consumption of cigarettes declined from over 125 packs per person to about 60, more than twice as great as the drop
(D) California has seen per capita consumption of cigarettes decline from over 125 packs annually to about 60, a drop more than twice as great as that
(E) California has seen annual per capita consumption of cigarettes decline from over 125 packs per person to about 60, more than twice as great as that

2. E: per capita和per person语义重复,错;more than twice修饰了decline from over 125 packs per person to about 60,没有D中直接用一个名drop代替整个decline的动作更来得简洁,而且语义清晰。

33. more than 300 rivers在这边我认为就是句子的主词,并没有修饰谁然后后面的more than all the North Am ...
