120. (30893-!-item-!-188;#058&005903)
Although the turtle has been toothless for more than 150 million years, in some contemporary turtle species the moderately sharp and jagged edges of their horny jaws function for teeth.
(A) their horny jaws function for teeth
(B) its horny jaws function for teeth
(C) its horny jaws function as do teeth
(D) the horny jaws function as teeth do
(E) the horny jaws function as teeth
key E
prep解释说A 中的their 与 the turtle不一致,可是我觉得既然是在 in some contemporary turtle species里而且用了edges 这里也可以用their啊,怎么就只一种turtle呢?
their指代species。
但是我不知道their jaws跟the jaws的区别。

in some contemporary turtle species the moderately sharp and jagged edges of their horny jaws 我觉得主语好像是 edeges吧,从句说turtle没有牙齿,但是在其他种类里这里用了species,他们的edges function as牙齿,而且这里谓语也是function.

这边我有一个问题是 in some contemporary tu and jagged edges of the horny jaws function as teeth.
我有点疑惑「the moderately sharp and jagged edges of the ….. 」
rtle species the moderately sharp
「the moderately sharp and jagged edges of the …..
ps:not NN, but I'm quite sure.

答案是E没问题但是a说 their与the turtle has been 不一致,也就说为了保持一致应该用单数its,但是in some contemporary species中some可以确定species是复数,那么its又与species矛盾了啊

jaws 显然不是 although 后面“the turtle”的 jaws ,而是 some contemporary turtle species 的jaws 。
后半句应该理顺了说应该是 the moderately sharp and jagged edges of _ jaws founction as teeth in some contemporary turtle species .
主语是“the moderately sharp and jagged edges of _ jaws ” ,谓语是 “function as”,宾语是“teeth” ,后面的“in some contemporary turtle species ”作
我觉得its/the都一定有道理,而their明显错。但the更加好些,因为用在表示身体部位的名词前要用the;
如果their指代of the turtle,指单复数不一致;应该是its

“in some contemporary turtle species ”作 状语修饰谓语 “function as”有点不妥,我觉得
“in some contemporary turtle species ”应该是介词短语修饰主语
themoderately sharp and jagged edges of horny jaws ,如果将答案A改为:
in some contemporary turtle species themoderately sharp and jagged edges of their horny jaws functionas teeth.

It is much easier if you understand what the sentence is saying before you make corrections.
Statements:
1. turtle has been toothless for millions of years
2. certain SPECIES (of turtle) have edges that act as teeth.
This should automatically eliminate B and C. Because the subject of the second part is SPECIES.
The second part of the test is idiomatic expressions. X functions as Y is the correct idiom. Thus the answer should be E.

Between D&E, D changes the meaning to say that the jaws perform the same functions as teeth do (the jaws chew), whereas E retains the original meaning that the jaws act as teeth -> so E
