B.empire, fashioned from either the spotted sandstone of Mathura or from

这题的答案是E. 通过either...or...的正确搭配来排除ABCD项就可以直接选出E了. 但是E项的时态还是有些奇怪:

这句的主干是: ...images...date from... and were fashioned....

前面一个动词date是用的一般现在时, 后面却用了一般过去时. 时态不平行, 这样也可以吗?

是可以的，因为date（确定时代）是发生在现在的事情，fashioned指的是IMAGES曾经流行过，用一般现在时就错了。这里并不存在平行结构，平行结构一般有连接词，比如and, but之类的

还是有点不明白....E项正好有and这个连接词. 我也就是看到这个词, 才认定是平行结构的....

举个例子，He is a Chinese, and went to US two years ago。不能说存在什么并列问题吧。
