235. Spanning more than fifty years, Friedrich Miiller began his career in an unpromising apprenticeship as a Sanskrit scholar and culminated in virtually every honor that European governments and learned societies could bestow.

(A)Miiller began his career in an unpromising apprenticeship as
(B)Miiller's career began in an unpromising apprenticeship as
(C)Miiller's career began with the unpromising apprenticeship of being
(D)Miiller had begun his career with the unpromising apprenticeship of being
(E)the career of Miiller has begun with an unpromising apprenticeship of

请问正确选项B中begin in是词组吗?in可否被with替换?

Miiller's career began as a Sanskrit scholar。。。。 in an unpromising apprenticeship。 begin with sth, such as: "begin with a story."

in an unpromising apprenticeship是什么意思呀?

an unpromising apprenticeship
我觉得B,C区别主要在as和of being上。

但我的意思是in an unpromising apprenticeship中为什么用介词in呢,with为什么不行?

     例如dansy说的begin with a story

on the dictionary, in has a meaning:

during a period of time,

apprenticeship has a meaning:

the period of time in which you are an apprentice

so in an unpromising apprenticeship

is much better than with

Friedrich Muller.

Spanning more than fifty years?

Miiller's career began as a Sanskrit scholar。。。。 in an unpromising apprenticeship。

Choice C corrects this error but produces an unidiomatic construction by using apprenticeship of being instead of apprenticeship as.

longman 关于apprenticeship 解释:the job of being an apprentice, or the period of time in which you are an apprentice
He's serving an apprenticeship as a printer. a five-year apprenticeship

是不是说apprenticeship在这里做后者讲,即the period of time in which you are an apprentice ,这样从逻辑关系上也和Spanning more than fifty years对应得较好。可是Miller’s career began in an unpromising apprenticeship as中有个an??
