个人理解：这里是 Miiller's career began as a Sanskrit scholar。。。。 in an unpromising apprenticeship。 begin in 不是词组。 begin with sth, such as: "begin with a story."这里不能替换。

例如dansy说的begin with a story

我的理解是，这个被spanning修饰的逻辑主语要做两个谓语的主语，一个began，还有一个culminated 所以只有career才可以担当这个角色。

我不认同，因为og中是把apprenticeship as 看成是一体的：Choice C corrects this error but produces an unidiomatic construction by using apprenticeship of being instead of apprenticeship as.

longman 关于apprenticeship 解释：the job of being an apprentice, or the period of time in which you are an apprentice
He's serving an apprenticeship as a printer. a five-year apprenticeship

是不是说apprenticeship在这里做后者讲，即the period of time in which you are an apprentice ，这样从逻辑关系上也和Spanning more than fifty years对应得较好。可是Miller’s career began in an unpromising apprenticeship as中有个an??
