我觉得除非有明显的语言标志象a group of或a collection of，最好还是不要主观臆断。

have recently become已经明显的告诉我们lizards是做复数了。

familiar to biologists as excellent animals跟前面的familiar to schoolchildren as chameleons复数对应。
