我觉得是这个意思： the land that (symbolized the possibility of freedom to him) 这个him就是Marcus Garvey. 就是说非洲这片土地，对MG来讲，意味着自由的可能性。

here "to him" is just like this: It's important to me.
885-8 "would or could" means the past tense, but future tense is needed here.
"will be or could be" right represents the future tense. could:possibility can be used in the future tense. Further, "that" should be put after "think"

我最近在看定从与过去分词/现在分词修饰的差别, 所以反复问和这类相关的, 请问leeon可有这方面的总结?

定语从句强调的是结果，现在分词强调的是状态和过程。两者所表达的意义不同。

XDF补充材料上有这样的例题。可惜我没有记下是哪几道题。
