AI 11

“When someone achieves greatness in any field — such as the arts, science, politics, or business — that person’s achievements are more important than any of his or her personal faults.”

When some people achieve greatness, are those greatness more important than any of their personal faults? The answer is never positive. Admittedly some significant achievements could cover the great persons’ disadvantages, however, when those disadvantages have significantly negative influence on other people, worse still, on the whole society, them should be focused on more than achievements. I ascribe my view to following reasons.

First of all, as I mentioned above, some faults of great persons could badly influence the society. Our current society works continually by the cooperate efforts by its members. If, unfortunately, some scientists who have got huge inventions about colon and received award from the society desire to make certain research on colon-people, then they will bring disaster to human beings if they use the potential result on only-for-profit fields just for money they crave. Another example is that if a gifted boxer, who won an important match and then became the NO.1 in his sports field, raped several women or hit other people by personal purpose, it is out of question that he will and should be punished by laws because of his serious crime. In general, when some great people have had bad influence on other people or the whole society, their achievements become little and their faults make them notorious.

Secondly, such faults by achievers could be broadcast by media, which could provide access to children who may mimic those bad behaviors. Children are at such ages in which they are eager to learn from other people, especially from achievers. When a specific achiever became their model, they probably learn any activities from their models without telling right from wrong. Therefore, severe behaviors outweigh the greatness the people have achieved in this light.

To sum up, I strongly support that when some great people have behaved badly, they should be punished no matter how great they are, for the reason that they not only had an adverse impact on the harmonious society but also played a bad role on the growth of the future masters of our society.
