In Virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it.
(E) attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.

Please help me to analyze the this sentence with answer E and translate it in Chinese, I am not sure what roles "or render harmeless," and "the chemical irritant" act as here.

酶的生成是生物体为了代谢，或释放无害化学刺激物的努力。酶就是化学刺激物。

perhaps I think it should be "... are the organism's attempt to metabolize, or render harmless,(are) the chemical irritant.

我同意ca3ltoys的说法。

that从句后是个倒装句型，把are提前了。

that从句解释酶（enzymes）的作用，只是个从句的引导词，在句子中不做其他成分。

还请大家指正。
