标题: 大全551一个想不明白的指代问题

551. Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter compared to those that can be detected by ground-based instruments.

(A) compared to those that can be detected

(B) compared to those they can detect

(D) than those that can be detected

(E) than those detecting

答案是D，讨论区中说those 指代sources

但是从逻辑上讲fainter的，和被capture的不都应该是light嘛？后半句说其他instrument可以detect到，明显适合前半句说HST能够capture 到light对应

from sources是修饰light的，为什么fainter还是指代sources呢？

比较的是A twenty times fainter than B，

我想应该先清楚这个后置定语来修饰谁的，

如果是针对light的应该放到light后面的吧；

一上来，我也是马虎的选错了。。

后来我想想了哦：

C的错误是很明显的。。than that can be detected:

that 可以知道light，但是后面的can be detected ?应该是定语从句修饰前面的light。那么至少也因该是than light that can be detected..

正确的应该是than that that can be detected or than that detected by..

我也觉得that指代没什么问题啊，而且根本不用两个that，做定从标志肯定可以省，可能还是出在逻辑问题上，没想通

我也选错了

我这样认为：C不对

that can be detected by是定语从句，需要先行词，但是前面没有

如果考虑是先行词被省略了，这里就引起歧义，到底先行词是light还是sources呢？

作为than后面的比较对象不能是单独的定义从句

C改成：than light that can be detected by就对了

至于D，语法上确实对了，可是逻辑上，我认为不对

很明显，fainter是修饰light的，而不是修饰sources，D答案里面的比较无从得来

所以，我觉得此题无解！

这题比的是faint的程度，而faint的主体是sources而不是light，楼上有人认为主体应是light是没理解这句子意思，实际上light 有两个出处：一个是暗一些的sources,一个是亮20倍的sources.。所以后面的比照中心词肯定要和sources对应而不是和light,所以用those

faint修饰的应该是sources。哈勃太空望远镜可以捕捉到比目前地面设备可探测的光源暗淡二十倍的光源所发出的光。Faint表示暗淡、模糊、隐约，不一定要来修饰光线。说某个物体是暗淡的，这个完全说得通。查了一下牛津词典，里面faint的例句就有很多不是修饰光线的，例如：the sounds of music grew fainter in the distance. / Only faint traces of the tiger's tracks could be seen. / there is a faint hope that she may be cured

faint 也可以修饰光。

C肯定是错误滴，those指代sources是清楚滴，如果非要fainter修饰sources我也勉强接受，但关键是句义的对照。Once positioned in space the Hubble Space Telescope明显对应ground based instruments,而动词capture也明显对应detect，但宾语却是一个capture light，一个detect sources,这种比较太难受了，只能说是出题人故意恶心人。。。
