我个人的看法，主句的意思是sandpipers vanishing is a result of ...

从句意看，作者的意思是说像sandpipers赖以为生的草原和牧场由于residential and industrial development and of changes in farming practices 而消失一样，sandpipers，这个鸟本身也是由于上述原因消失的，所以说B: the birds itself...更佳，因为like表示的是类比，所类比的两个对象应该有可比性，这里面是用the grassy fields and old pastures 和 sandpipers比。
