(B)  extinction；its numbers are now five times more than

    

(C)  extinction，their numbers now fivefold what they were

    

(D)  extinction，now with fivefold the numbers they had

    

(E)  extinction，now with numbers five times greater than

    The plural numbers means a large crowd or multitude，while the singular number refers to a specific
quantity of individuals．Why here the "numbers" is correct???

numbers:an amount of something that can be counted

表示数量、数目，尤指参加某一活动的人数：

Visitor numbers increase in the summer.
