A,B,C很容易排除，所以就不列在这里了。手敲的，怪累的。答案是E.
D中的被动语态确实不好。可是E中的they不是指待不明么，如果指待最近的similar patterns,则根原句中意思不一致了，因为原句中是other animals被studied.所以从逻辑意思的角度我选择了D.
期待大家的看法。

恩，确实in as much depth 更好，可是关于E中的逻辑意思我始终觉得不对阿。

D用that从句来作限定, 表示"已经...的", 但是, 之前的would说明, 句子的逻辑意义不能用这种限定,应该使用if表条件状语分句吧. 另外, with ... depth可能不及in depth.
不知道是否正确.
我也是DE犹豫选了D的，句中的with我当时没跟with depth一起理解，而是理解成be studied with是一组的，不就是常用词组了吗？
但是听听上面的Whether other animal的对称，和would虚拟需要if条件句这两个解释还是很有说服力的。
另外关于it 和 they 的指代，上海新东方的老师在讲指代顺序的时候不是说就近指代原则的。
比如it， 从句中的it优先指代主句主语，主句主语为复数或是人不是物，则优先指代从句主语，都不能指代才就近指代。好像是这样的。
如果是这样，这里的they就应该优先指代主句主语other animal，就逻辑意思通畅了.
我也觉得这题答案不是太好，原句中的their指的是大猩猩，答案的they指的是other animals, 其实有指代不清的问题。

个人经验来说 代词指代：分句代词一般优先指代主句主语，其次指代分句主语，然后才是就近指代。而且 正如楼上所说 限定性定语从句表这一群东西里面，有这that后面所说的性质的子集。而这里用that修饰表达出这种逻辑意思貌似不太合理。在相比之下从逻辑 搭配和平行来说都是E比较好一点。最优选项嘛。 以上仅供参考 请楼主指正。
