Subjects such as art, music and drama should be a part of every child's basic education. Agree or disagree?

In recent years, there is an increasing tendency for most parents to send their children to learn some subjects other than those at school, such as art, music and drama. Growing numbers of people begin to believe these subjects should be included in every child's basic education. There may be one or two advantages of this study arrangement; however, I believe that there are far more disadvantages.

Admittedly, it may be true that children who study the subjects can acquire a useful skill and be outstanding among others. As we know, those subjects are becoming popular allover the world. And the one who is excellent in these fields can earn much money and very high reputation, such as the artist Picasso, the musician Mozart and the greatest Chinese drama player Meilanfang. All of them are highly appreciated by people, and were rich when they succeeded. Also, children good at music or art have more opportunity to shine. For example, they may sing a song or play instruments in a party, or paint a picture to hang on the wall. All these make them different from majority and give them confidences someway. Considerable though the advantages to study these subjects enjoys are, they can not compare with the benefits that freedom of avoiding the studying brings, when children's willing and the long time spent on the training are taken into account.

For the most important reason, not every child likes these subjects. One survey recently conducted by scientists in our college indicates that, more than 20 percents of the children who take part in learning the excess subjects are inclined to hate the strict training. There are some reasons. Some children like to do other activities in their spare time, such as playing games with their classmates, reading some funny books and even staying quietly to envision their business. They want to be set free from the subjects which should give way to those they enjoy most. On the other hand, when parents make these subjects compulsory to every child, it will generate a negative impact on the developments of children. Children undergo a great pressure of the learning. If they do not perform well as their parents expect, they will doubt their talents, asking themselves "Am I stupid?" or "Am I worse than others?" Subsequently, they will lose their confidence, not only on these subjects but in many other aspects such as the studying at school and even attitude toward live.

Moreover, the difficulty of mastering the disciplines of art determines that children have to spend as long time as possible on the training. I can see many times the small children packing a big instrument or panel on their backs on the bus, and hear the piano sounding nearly in all my spare time played by the little girl upstairs in my building. As I mentioned before, children dislike their parents impose the mission and pressure on them. Furthermore, sometimes it will affect their studying in school. Because they have not enough time to finish the homework, or the problems of training obsess the children while having classes. As we know, talents are very rare in the world, or in other words, people are talented in different aspects. For example, the one not endowed with a beautiful voice may be very intelligent in literature or mathematics.

From what has been discussed above, even though there may be one or two advantages to the arrangement, the disadvantages far outweigh them. Consequently, it stands to reason that not every child likes to attend the art education. And instead, parents would better consider children's willing than oblige them.
