标题: 关于twice的用法
72. The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United States increased by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.
(A) increased by more than twice
(B) increased more than two times
(C) more than doubled
(D) was more than doubled
(E) had more than doubled
OG72的解释中之处twice是副词, 我查了字典, 确实, twice只有一种词性:副词 因为by后面要接名词或代词, 所以这里twice不行. 答案C
但对于下面885中的一题:
17. In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of
(E) two times greater than
答案C. 这里的what it was是名词性宾语从句吗? 还是形容词性? 如果是名词性, 那么twice 是不是修饰what从句? 我感觉从意思上面, twice是要修饰这个从句的. 个人认为: 这个题选B好些, 因为twice作为副词修饰as..as是可以讲的通的.
"Twice two is four." 这是M-w上的例句, 这里的two是数词.
这些解释把我弄糊涂了, 究竟副词的用法是什么呀? 请大家帮忙!

这个问题我也有过，当时选的就是B，主要还是句子意思问题（深刻教训啊！！）
看这个the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States
C选项的意思是：A的人口增长率是B的两倍
B选项的意思是：A的人口增长率是B的（人口增长率）的两倍一样快
感觉平时我们就说：增长率是几倍，没说几倍那样快的
解释的不好也不清楚，大家请指点一下

举个例子
he is twice as strong as he was。注意比较对象
A中是twice as fast as the 1970’s
在这里是rate和1970's比较，是不对的
B中用it指代很模糊，
只有c正确比较，而且没有歧义。

这真是个好问题。我查了同事的一本字典， 非常破旧以至于看不出来源了。
上有例句：
He is twice the man he was. === He has twice the strength he had ===He is twice as strong as he was.
看来前面两句的结构和885-17 答案C 很象，好像是个形容词来修饰后面的名词的样子。(MM， 你是不是就是这点与我心有戚戚耶？)
不过这个字典也是说twice是副词，那么我们是不是只能理解成在上面句子里，它是修饰is的？

dansyMM的解释太及时了, 结合大家所有的建议, 我决定就这么记了: twice只能作副词, 在句子中表达的意思却是比较, 这样的题目, 首先要弄清楚比较的双方是否合理, 如果合理的话, 再看twice作为副词的位置: 可以用在as..as或比较级之前, 也可以放在比较点的名词之前, 担要保证twice前后的词要能直接搭配(副词的作用).
有不妥之处, 还请大家指正!

順便補充一下Dr.eye字典上, 倍數辭句型的用法敘述:
.. times the/my N ...
結構︰…倍數詞＋the（或所有格）＋名詞
說明︰此句型意為“是…的幾倍”。<倍數詞>與<名詞>之間一定有 the 或<所有格>。有時可改為“<倍數詞>＋as＋<形容詞>”。三倍以上的“倍”，通常用“times”。而“more than＋<倍數詞>＋the（或<所有格>）＋<名詞>”譯為“是…的幾倍還不止”。
It was over twice the distance of the earth from the sun.
那是地球到太陽的距離的兩倍多。
我想本題用 twice what 或許是因為 what 可以有時可等於 the thing that 的表示.

B 和C的区别在于句子含义，不能够说in 1999 rate of increase of A is nearly twice as fast as it was in 1991. 因为rate 不能够fast, increase 才能够fast！！！

iii. x times as adj. as 注意里面的adj要和前面的名词匹配

2. most companies pay twice more to full-time employees than (they pay) to part-time employess
意思上1 =2
问题是 括号中的东东可以省略么
似乎应该好象仿佛可能看上去不能省

twice adverb, predeterminer
(可见twice就是可以用作predeterminer)

1， twice和 two time虽然意思一样，可是词性不一样吧，那么所有以上牛牛列举的倍数的句型也适合twice吗？比如
a， x times adj（比较形式）than....
b, more than + x times +the+noun
c, X times as adj as .......等等
是不是以上的句型中， twice 和two times 都可以相互替代呀？？？

这句话我觉得关键是抓主干，这句可以简化成 In the 1980's the rate was nearly xxxxx the rate was in the 1970's. rate 之间比较我们只能说这个rate是那个rate的几倍，不能说这个rate 比那个rate快几倍。对于twice，two times的区别感觉上ETS喜欢twice用做“二倍”这个意思，而two times做“二次”用 。我个人理解ETS优选顺序是double〉twice〉two times。不知道对不对？
另外就比较级（包括同级比较）而言，than， as后面是用that，those指代前面相同的名词，而不用it。所以b是不对的。

double可以當動詞使用,例句(1):Their house has doubled in value since they bought it. (2)The government is threatening to double the tax on liquor.(A)要改成正確選項的話,much要改成many,因為ministers是可數名詞,在1997前面加上in就可以了
(C)按照OG給的解釋是說what it was is awkward ,wordy, and unclear.以前看到what it was就直接排除,但是看到樓主大全885裡面的例題,好像也不能這麼斷然就排除what it was的選項,不知道有哪位牛牛可以具體解釋一下

关于C指代it，OG4中倍数关系是修饰20,738 female ministers中这个数量，og解释中有“Double the figure for 1977 places the focus on the number and correctly completes the comparison.“可以为证。故what it was错在指代歧异。而对于OG中”What it was is awkward, wordy, and unclear“ ，其实What it was 只是相对the figure罗嗦，GMAT中不认最好，只认相对好，很business的逻辑啊：－）
所以what指代的主从并不一定都错的。这点还需总结完善～

因为这里有个 per milligram，插入语，把that给分开了，去掉插入语，不影响原句，E不对，是因为，charger的正确用法是，charge 后直接名词，不能说charge at a price

twice是adv副词，第1种equal to twice用法错误, 也罗嗦。
应该是第2种 twofold as that 更好。twofold 是adv &adj均可。

这里有点瑕疵哈·我认为twice是不能直接加名词N的·必须是twice the number/the rate/the price/the size之类的。如果是twice people之类的肯定错，（除了twice日期）因为twice是副词不是adj。这题其实不是twice 直接加something，而是that指代了the amount of pollution。

然后CD选项就是原文意思的表达了。这一点上面的解释得很清楚

个人感觉but后面的分句主语是twice the numbers of tucks alone ，其中twice和alone是修饰部分，谓语是came off。
一开始看这道题也觉得the number会更好一点，但是没有这个选项。后来有了另一个想法。主句是说a total of 469,000 cars and trucks，所以选项中的that number of trucks是指代the total number of trucks，从而把total的意思明确出来。
不知道对不对啊。

时隔这么久翻到这个帖子，估计层主已经不需要解答了。但是还是说一下我的看法吧。这题我也想了很久，但是后来突然反应过来好像是倒装！
还原后就是but assembly lines came off twice that number of trucks alone in 1929.
还原过后感觉明朗了很多！这里的twice还是和上面一样的adv的用法，twice + n 这里的n指 that number， that指上文的总数469000，如果用the，则会有歧义的感觉。
这题想要表达的意思是 1914年，美国生产了469000量小汽车和卡车，但是到了1929年，卡车的产量就已经是1914年两车之和数量的两倍了。 所以这里必须用that，指代469000.
