标题: HKUST Econ MSc Vs SUNY

想要申请US的Finance PHD。目前在国内，为申请作准备，是从了HKUST的Economics的MSc还是SUNY系列的M.A. in Econ更好呢。SUNY在排名上似乎比HKUST差，但是从联系老师，面试各各方面都更加方便。HK马上就要决定了，HK$15,000的保证金不是小数目，大家给点意见好吗

In my opinions, HKUST professors also have strong networks with professors in US. I will compare the tuition fee and make the decision.

Try to compare the courses. Does MSc focus more math than MA? Math is very important for you to pursue your finance phd degree. English speaking is also important but may not be as important as math.

HKUST的学费是9万港币，保证金是不可以返还的，但是以后可以抵扣学费。SUNY的学费也是1万美金左右。UST的核心课程包括15个学分的Mathematics for business and Economics ，还可以选择三门PHD阶段的Microeconomic Theory I ，Macroeconomic Theory I 和计量经济学，另外15个学分的任选课程可以选择系里面的任选课程。我觉得选择的余地比较大，课程设得比较合理。SUNY的核心课程就是一门微观，一门宏观，Quantitative Methods I和II，其余也是任选。感觉对Math也挺重视的。都是八门课。差不多。大家怎们看呢。

香港的MSC才一年根本没时间准备申请去上学的第一个学期就得开始申请和本科直接申请没多大区别

PhD level courses definitely help you for application. It seems the HKUST program is for people who try to apply phd in the future.

from my position, i prefer the HKUST too, better reputation, courses schedule and faculties.

if the time you need to enroll is 1 yr compare to 2 yr, I would choose the latter one

SUNY可以选择1年半左右毕业，比较灵活，香港是1年毕业

Support HKUST! becoz

(1) This is my mother school! I did my Master of Econ there too!

(2) I think the connections to US schools and profs are good. Many have worked in US universities. Or they have friends/co-authors in US universities. but I dont know the case in SUNY. Are the profs in SUNY actively involving in research?

(3) If you do well in your courses, the profs are happy to write you good recommendation letters.I got very good letters and i think they helped me a lot in my application.

(4) Living expenses in HK should be cheaper than in SUNY!
