我对这道题也不是很明白，to 在这里怎么讲，本句的明确意思是什么？请高手指点。

这个问题真还没好好想过,因为to the extent 是个习惯用法,看的熟了,就理所当然

个人参考意见:

当修饰extent时,介词提到先行词前 the extent to which

原句意思说"red shift" 这个术语在天文学中表示一个程度,(这个程度就是light from a distant galaxy has been shifted toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.)

1, extent to which ... == to the extent that ...
2, extend to , to some extent ...
3, the difficult, though, is that there is a 'toward' after. ETS really wants to make a trap here

extent to whcih 中的 to 是接在has been shifted后面；

then light has been shifted to x extent towards ...
