标题: MBA after PhD?

I have a good friend/former colleague who has a PHD then got an MBA from CMU.  He is doing very well for him self.  Don't count your self short because you have a great niche coming out of a decent MBA program.  Another friend has a Masters in Biology and then went to a top consulting firm (LEK) after MBA.  You can land a business development or consulting role easily at a top Pharmaceutical/Medical Devices company because of your industry and product expetise.  Go for it and good luck.

One important note:  Make sure you have a good story for your education experience and how the combination of a PhD and MBA leads to your future aspirations.

Fisherrui and others, many many thanks.

Recently, it has been a tough time for me - swinging between being
dreamy and desperate, doing lots of research on MBA programs and
consulting career, and still trying to maintain an acceptable working
progress in lab work. After asking so many people for advice, it has
just got more and more clear to me that though I am not in a strong
position, I have to try anyways. What worries me most is whether or not
I can get a decent job after doing an MBA, in relatively good schools,
of course. I fully understand that MBA by itself is nothing else but "a
piece of paper". It is the skills and networking opportunities you gain
from the top-notch training programs that matter.

Anyway, being a bio PhD who have wasted 5 years in bench work and see
no future after getting the PhD (another example of "a piece of
paper"), I really have nothing to lose, so I have no excuse to step
back to my shell either. Wish all of us good luck.

I have also been struggling this issue. I agree that if you believe this is your dream, go chase it. There is nothing to lose. Another point that I want to raise is that you might want to consider your post MBA job landing. An Ph.D+ MBA is a great plus, but without any real work expeireince, it would be hard for you to go to consulting industry later on, considering you will be competing with similar technical person who has MBA+experience from big pharma

Basic research should be ok to land in a job in big research companies, lots of big pharma have fundemental resarch division just like acdemia. So besides trying for consulting right away and applying MBA, you may want to research the big companies as well. If your final goal is to get in a top management consulting firm, 'd better put some big names on your resume, great B-school, big company, they look for big names and your track record. If your goal is something else, then it is another story.

Whatever you decide, best luck.

I suggest that you try to look for some programs related to your major, such as Health Care etc.

Don't be upset.  If you could get a PhD, there would be nothing impossible.
