According to findings derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the area of the brain in which a second or third language is stored depends on the age of the language learner; whereas each language occupies a distinct area of the brain in an adult learner, language areas overlap in a young child.

A.      whereas each language occupies a distinct area of the brain in an adult learner,

B.       whereas for adults each language occupies a distinct area of the brain and

C.      each language occupies a distinct area of the brain when they are learned by an adult, while

D.      each language in adults occupied a distinct area of the brain, while

E.       each language occupying a distinct area of the brain for an adult learner, and

1。whereas

2。D中说language in adults,我觉得这个说法不恰当阿,language of adults 好些把,我觉得D改成 each language in adults' brains 就舒服多了……

这句考的还是Parallerism,你看 两句都是 .......in adult learner,......in a young child.

A.      whereas each language occupies a distinct area of the brain in an adult learner,

B.       whereas for adults each language occupies a distinct area of the brain and 改原意

C.      each language occupies a distinct area of the brain when they指代有问题

are learned by an adult, while

D.      each language in adults

occupied a distinct area of the brain, while

E.       each language occupying a distinct area of the brain for an adult learner, and

Where did you get this from? Are you able to give a few examples?

In my opinion, the answer should be A.

19. GWD-18-Q2
According to findings derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the area of the brain in which a second or third language is stored depends on the age of the language learner; whereas each language occupies a distinct area of the brain in an adult learner, language areas overlap in a young child.

A.    whereas each language occupies a distinct area of the brain in an adult learner,
?    From MGMT SC: The author originally mean to contrast the second part of the sentence to the first part, you must preserve that intent. Therefore you should keep ‘whereas’.
?    Also ‘in an adult learner’ must be paralleled to ‘’in a young child’.
B.    whereas for adults each language occupies a distinct area of the brain and
-> The insertion of ‘for adults’ seems unnecessary.
C.    each language occupies a distinct area of the brain when they are learned by an adult, while
-> No ‘whereas’, incorrect.
D.    each language in adults occupied a distinct area of the brain, while
?    Occupies has been changed to occupied. But this sentence has no reason to use past tense.
?    Also, there is no ‘whereas’.
E.    each language occupying a distinct area of the brain for an adult learner, and
?    there is no ‘whereas’;

whereas的用法:used to make a statement that describes how two people, groups, etc., are different
Some of these species have flourished, whereas others have struggled.
Whereas many people have supported the proposal, others have opposed it very strongly.
He has brown eyes whereas his children have green eyes.

B.and连接的是两个independent clause, 而and的左边是whereas引导的dependent clause;for adults还可以错误的修饰“language areas overlap...”,变得illogical
C.when使用不当。it seems to suggest that "these languages" occupy distinct area when they are learned by an adult and not at other times !
D.in adults错误的修饰了each language,这是illogical的 ; occupied时态错误

open to discuss
