UTDallas International management studies PhD program
在拿到该校的电话面试前,对该项目其实了解甚少。后来通过和该项目的教授和博士接触,才了解并喜欢上这个项目的。
UTDallas是个公立学校,学校的排名比较一般。但是管理学院的这个国际管理项目确实不错,应该说是管理领域各分支特别是战略、组织理论在国际管理领域的融合和应用。在answers和wikipedia关于UTD的介绍里都突出强调了这个项目。具体情况请参见附录2。
我个人最后选择这个项目主要基于以下几点考虑:
1。研究实力强。
在这个网址可以查到按照在top journal上论文发表情况的各校排名http://somdev.utdallas.edu/top100Ranking/,可以看到这个项目的教授的研究能力实际上是很强的。面试我的PhD program coordinator光简历就有25页!有n多publication!很年轻,但很活跃,导师强烈推荐他。
2。教授中有好几位focus在中国的管理问题和制度理论的研究,这是我的研究兴趣点。
教授中有4位是中国人,占了项目全部faculty里的1/5,已经很强了。中国学生也很多,前年一共招了2个人,有1个中国人;去年一共招了3个人,有2个是大陆的,有1个是台湾的。
3。Program较小,干活机会多,和教授合作发文章机会多。
博士生较少,所以据说在这儿学生是香饽饽呵,老师都希望你跟着他干活(这也是我后来没有考虑去所谓的名校的原因)。我觉的这样能有更多的involvement,得到更多的锻炼。在这个项目里的教授和博士生合作发表的机会也很多(参见附录1)。
4。整个team感觉很热情。
感觉整个team,包括教授、学生都随时给你提供帮助,乐意分享他们的经验,给你提供很多信息,并且很热情的欢迎你加入他们的program。作为一个申请者,我承认我很在乎别人的态度……

学校的中文译名,有人喜欢“德州大学达拉斯分校”,但UT at Austin 就直称自己为德州大学,搞得我们成了他们的分校似的(其实我们本科生的录取线比他们还高!),所以在这个版就叫“达拉斯德州大学”。(砖头!)
1.2 全美第八大城市 “Big D”
一条南北方向的75号高速公路横穿达拉斯。在这条高速公路的两边,散落着一栋栋低矮的厂房和科技园园区,其中驻扎着AT&T、阿尔卡特,华为(约有600多人)、中兴(约有200多人)等鼎鼎大名的电信厂商。因此,这一带也被称为“通信走廊”。学校就与他们比邻而居。2008年春,看到靠近学校waterview路边(HP对面)新建起一栋大楼,赫然刮得就是华为的标志,看来华为自己买地建大楼了,要和
达拉斯,很多人只知道这是肯尼迪总统被刺杀的地方,以及NBA的小牛队。其实这是一个以石油与高科技在八十年代新兴的城市,很多公司将公司总部设在这里,Fortune 500强今年的第一 Exxon Mobil 就在达拉斯,就在学校边上有信息技术集成商EDS,百货公司J.C.Penny;全球第三大半导体厂商德州仪器(TI);其他还有Affiliated Computer Svcs;Alliance Data Systems;Kimberly-Clark,西南航空,TXU, Dean Foods, Tenet Healthcare都将总部设在达拉斯。使这个城市非常好找工作。

说一句让我自己也惭愧的话,假如每个申请人都能对自己所申请学校有这种程度的了解,那offer率一定会大幅提高,又假如每个申请人能如此有条理的展示出来,那亦是更多新老CDer的宝贵财富。
