The answer is D.

为什么E 的 "in fact possibly serving" in fact possibly serving不好？是不是因为这样既修饰rises又修饰falls，所以不好？

首先，can 和 possibly的意思不同。

第二，serving现在分词表伴随发生，illogically.

I *think* "in fact" 跟 "possibly" 不可以在連在一起, 因為in fact是在指事實, and "possibly"是指可能.
事實跟可能不可能同時出現...

2.此处动名词的使用也不符合规则，比如with doing + n.

...rises and falls (verb)..., serving as an approximate thermometer (noun.)

E is incorrect because of the wrong logical prediction! How can verbs serving as a noun?
