标题: Should I try again next year?
I need some advices from you guys. I am already 29 this year, and study in the US Top 50 Econ PhD program. I just passed the comprehensive exams but failed to get any offer from finance program this time. I dont know what is wrong with my profile. (It might be my low TOEFL score, only 104) I am very confused currently if I should continue my study here or try again next yr. Any advice is appreciated.

Take TOEFL exam again. Your score is not good enough to pass the pre-screening stage. Also if you are in US already, you should try to visit those departments in person and talk to some professors directly. That might help a lot.

take it easy, the god just opens another door that you temporarily cant see.

1. ask for the waiver for your toefl, that shouldnt bother you

2 try to take more math classes, and age is not a big deal

3 lower your schools' tier

4 do you think your reference letters hurt you? in my opinion, it is usually harder for transfer student to get a strong letter.

5 phd sucks. your life may be better without it.

你是博士第二年？会不会是推荐信的问题，老师可能不希望你转校。

btw, 不知道以往有没有经济phd中途转金融成功的，也许只能曲线救国了。。。

老实说，我觉得楼主背景挺好的（assume那些微观计量数学都学得不错的话）

经济转博士应该很常见啊，我认识有些朋友就是这样转过来的

托福的话，楼主可以waive掉吧（不过有少数几间不能waive）

可能是推荐信出问题了？楼主你有看过那些推荐信吗，可能有些老师表面上跟你谈得很好，可是信里却写得不怎样。只要一封negative的信就可以ruin你所有东西了。。

我觉着你都过了 comprehensive exams了，英语应该不是问题，金融申请真的应该是很难的。。顺便问一下你的 comprehensive exams是什么形式的？

建议如果美国的学校实在不行，你也可以考虑加拿大和英国啊，我觉着你年龄也不小了，不要浪费时间了！加油！

很正常啊，拿到好offer的背景都比你强，很多有working paper,很好的推荐信，等等。

别人只是没说出来罢了，光看一个学历，当然不如econ phd, 牛人有你不知道的闪光点。

我觉得吧，我们现在做的事情就是为了将来不后悔。楼主如果轻易放弃了梦想，可能将来会后悔的。何况再试一年哪怕不成，你大不了继续读econ phd啊，对你没有什么损失的。

只是lz要打听一下，是不是每个学校都会要reapplicant呢？

Thank you, guys. To m05025004, the comprehensive exams were via written form, nothing special. The cotents covered are classical books of economics. The failing rate ranges from 20-50%, differing year by year. I will obtain MS in statistics here next year whatever, then decide to do research or apply again.

i think research experience and excellent reference letters (you need to make sure) will improve your chance.

Why not change the mind and try to go to industry? Can you take another 4-5 years to take a doctoral program?
